The Kerala government is moving closer to approving the final alignment for the Thiruvananthapuram Metro, with the finance department clearing the proposed route. A final presentation will be made before Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan before cabinet approval. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has urged expedited decision-making to secure central funding. Two potential routes have been identified, with the final choice shaping the project's reach. Infrastructure work, including the Sreekaryam flyover, has already begun. Once operational, the Metro aims to ease traffic congestion and improve urban mobility in Kerala's capital.
The Kerala government is moving forward with plans for the Thiruvananthapuram Metro, with the project's alignment set for final approval soon. The finance department has reportedly cleared the proposed route, and a final presentation will be made before Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The project, which has been under discussion for several years, is now expected to take a major step towards implementation once the cabinet gives its nod.
The Metro's alignment is proposed to start from Kazhakkoottam in the north, but the government has yet to finalize the complete route. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), the agency in charge of the project, has urged the state to expedite the decision-making process. The project was mentioned in the 2025-26 state budget, signaling its priority in Kerala's urban transport plans. Transport Secretary Biju Prabhakar confirmed that the alignment study is in progress and will soon be presented for approval.
A key factor in the project's progress is securing funding from the central government. To achieve this, the state has already approved a Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) and an Alternate Analysis Report (AAR), essential steps in obtaining central assistance. KMRL had earlier submitted an executive summary of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) in February 2024, outlining two possible routes-one through Karyavattom, MG Road, and Thampanoor, and another along NH 66 via Kazhakkoottam, Akkulam, and Enchakkal. The final choice will determine the scale and reach of the Metro network.
Infrastructure development linked to the Metro has also begun, with the construction of the Sreekaryam flyover underway. This project is part of the broader effort to improve urban mobility and reduce congestion in the city. Once operational, the Metro is expected to ease traffic in key commercial and residential areas, providing a faster alternative to road transport.
The Thiruvananthapuram Metro is seen as a crucial step in enhancing public transport in Kerala's capital, and its progress will be closely watched. With the final alignment approval expected soon, the focus will shift to funding and project execution, ensuring timely completion of this much-anticipated urban transit system.
