The Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway is nearing completion on its 76-km stretch between Igatpuri and Amane near Bhiwandi, with officials expecting it to open by March. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has confirmed that final works, including lane marking and painting, will be completed soon, making the highway ready for public use. The project, initially delayed due to political transitions, aims to enhance connectivity and reduce travel time. Additionally, MSRDC is addressing concerns regarding the lack of roadside amenities by developing ten utility areas along the corridor. The expressway will integrate with the Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway at Amane, further improving regional transport links.
Motorists will soon be able to access the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway directly from Bhiwandi by March. The 76-km stretch between Igatpuri and Amane, near Bhiwandi, is expected to be completed by the end of the month, after which it will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, according to officials from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the project's nodal agency.
MSRDC officials stated that lane-marking and painting works, typically undertaken once other construction activities are completed, have already begun and are set to be finished between February 25 and 27. Following this, the highway will be ready for public use. The inauguration ceremony is planned for March, subject to the availability of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar.
Currently, motorists can access the expressway from Igatpuri near Nashik up to Nagpur, covering a distance of 625 km. While there were initial plans to partially open the 76-km stretch between Igatpuri and Amane in late 2024, political delays caused by government formation and portfolio distribution postponed the launch. Instead, it was decided to complete all pending construction and open the stretch in its entirety, according to MSRDC sources.
The expressway project was first announced in November 2015, with construction commencing in February 2019. Divided into 16 construction packages, the access-controlled greenfield expressway allows toll collection for 40 years. Built to accommodate speeds of up to 150 kmph, it incorporates modern infrastructure such as wildlife underpasses, flyovers, and pedestrian crossings to ensure efficiency and safety.
The expressway has been gradually opened in phases since December 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first 520-km section between Nagpur and Shirdi. In May 2023, then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated a 105-km stretch from Shirdi to Bharvir. Another 25-km stretch between Bharvir and Igatpuri was opened in March 2024 without a formal ceremony.
At Amane, the expressway connects to the under-construction Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway, which links the Jawaharlal Nehru Port to Gujarat. To facilitate smoother movement between the Mumbai-Nashik Highway and the Samruddhi Expressway, a temporary arrangement has been put in place.
Despite its significance, motorists have raised concerns over the limited wayside amenities. Travellers have reported difficulty in finding eateries and rest stops along the route, making long journeys challenging. To address these issues, MSRDC is developing ten public utility areas equipped with petrol stations, eateries, and rest stops to enhance commuter convenience.
With the upcoming extension to Bhiwandi, the expressway is set to improve connectivity between Mumbai and Nagpur, reducing travel time and alleviating congestion on existing highways. Once inaugurated, the expressway is set to become a vital infrastructure project and commuters will benefit from a faster route directly from Mumbai.
