The Andhra Pradesh government has provided the specifics on the land acquisition process for the Vizag metro rail project, highlighting a total of 99.8 acres of land required. From this nearly nine acres are privately owned, while the rest is under the control of various state and central government departments. Visakhapatnam district officials have set up a committee to identify the precise areas of land needed for the project.


Of the total land, 47 acres belong to the state government, 36 acres are owned by Vizag Port, four acres are with the railways, and three acres are under the central government. The remaining nine acres are privately held. The land acquisition cost is projected to be around INR 882 crore. Phase one of the metro rail project, which has already received approval, will span approximately 46.23 km and will include 42 metro stations. While the majority of these stations will be located on government-owned land, there may be some need for private land for additional amenities.

The first phase will feature three key corridors: from Vizag Steel Plant junction to Kommadi (34.4 km), from Gurudwara to Old Post Office (5.08 km), and from Thatichetlapalem to Chinna Waltair (6.75 km). The corridor connecting the Vizag Steel Plant junction to Kommadi will be developed along the national highway in a double-decker format, minimising the need for private land. However, the city corridor, particularly the Thatichetlapalem to Chinna Waltair route, which will have seven stations, might require extra private land due to limited government land in the area.

Revised cost estimates for this phase, considering 2024 market prices, stand at INR 11,498 crore. Phase two of the project, which will add a fourth corridor from Kommadi to Bhogapuram, will commence after the Bhogapuram airport becomes operational.

The process for awarding tenders for the metro was initially expected to be completed before the 2019 elections. However, due to the election code, the then TDP government delayed announcing the successful bidder. After the YSRCP government took office in 2019, they cancelled the previous tenders and extended the project's scope to cover more areas, but progress remained slow during their five-year tenure. When the TDP-led NDA alliance returned to power in 2024, the government revised the cost estimates to reflect current market prices and is now pushing for 100% funding from the Union government for the metro project. Tenders will be issued once the project receives approval from the Centre.
