Synopsis

Survey and investigation works for Hyderabad's Metro corridors from JBS to Medchal and Shamirpet are progressing swiftly, with studies on traffic patterns, soil conditions, and environmental impact nearing completion. Traffic surveys assess commuter trends, while soil tests ensure structural stability, with 14 tests completed on the JBS-Medchal route and 11 on JBS-Shamirpet. Environmental assessments focus on air quality, noise pollution, and biodiversity. The 24 km JBS-Medchal and 21 km JBS-Shamirpet corridors will enhance connectivity. Detailed project reports (DPRs) are expected by March-end for state approval, marking a key milestone in Hyderabad's metro expansion efforts.

Survey works and investigations for the Metro rail corridors connecting JBS to Medchal and Shamirpet are moving ahead quickly, according to NVS Reddy, the managing director of Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML). These investigations are essential for preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) and focus on aspects like traffic patterns, soil conditions, and environmental impacts.

Metro officials mentioned that comprehensive traffic surveys are being conducted to assess both current and projected daily travel patterns. This includes studying traffic at junctions, pedestrian footfall, and estimating the percentage of commuters likely to switch to the Metro services in the future. Hyderabad's existing metro lines, which have been in operation since 2017, have shown a steady rise in commuter numbers, highlighting the growing demand for further expansion of the city's metro network.

The soil testing phase, which involves drilling boreholes every half kilometre to depths of 50 to 100 feet, is also nearing completion. Existing data from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is being used, alongside new tests being carried out at strategic locations. As of now, 14 tests have been completed on the JBS-Medchal route, and 11 on the JBS-Shamirpet route. The planned total number of tests for these routes is 25 and 19, respectively. These soil tests are critical for ensuring the stability and safety of the corridors.

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is investigating various ecological factors, with officials stating that the main focus is to understand and reduce any potential environmental impacts. They are studying air quality, noise pollution levels, water resources, and the project's effect on local biodiversity and livelihoods. In similar projects, such as the MG Road-Raidurg corridor, environmental concerns like soil erosion and water management were addressed successfully, with mitigation measures ensuring the sustainability of these developments.

The JBS-Medchal corridor is planned to span 24 km, while the JBS-Shamirpet route will cover 21 km. With these additions, the city will continue to enhance its public transportation network, which has proven effective in reducing traffic congestion. Reddy assured that all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure passenger comfort and safety.

Following the directives of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, metro officials stated that they aim to complete all studies and submit the DPRs, including those for the Shamshabad Airport-Future City route, to the state government by the end of March. Once the state government approves the reports, they will be forwarded to the central government for final clearance. This timeline reflects the steady pace at which the project is progressing, ensuring that it will move into the next phases promptly.

The rapid progress of the survey and investigation works for the Metro corridors between JBS, Medchal, and Shamirpet builds on the successful expansion of Hyderabad's metro network in recent years. With traffic patterns, soil conditions, and environmental factors being thoroughly examined, the city's plans to enhance public transport connectivity are well on track. By March-end, the detailed project reports are expected to be ready for state approval, marking another significant milestone in Hyderabad's metro development. Given the growing demand for metro services, these projects are poised to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity across the city.
