The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will conduct a fresh survey of 173 slum clusters to assess eligibility for rehabilitation under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban). The survey, expected to be completed in six months, will collect data on household counts, financial status, and residency eligibility for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) flats. Currently, 205 out of 378 DDA-controlled slum clusters have been surveyed. This initiative follows past in-situ rehabilitation projects at Jailorwala Bagh and Kalkaji, aiming to improve living conditions for slum dwellers.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is set to begin a new survey of 173 slum clusters that have not yet been assessed. This initiative aims to gather information to support future rehabilitation efforts and improve infrastructure and civic services in these areas. The DDA is currently seeking specialist organizations to conduct these surveys, which will align with the requirements of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban). The data collected will help determine the eligibility of slum residents for resettlement programs. This step is crucial, as many slum dwellers rely on these programs for better housing options.
According to previous surveys, there are 675 slum clusters in Delhi that existed before 2006. Of these, 378 are located on land owned by the DDA and central government agencies, while the remaining clusters fall under the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board's jurisdiction. A DDA official mentioned that in 2017, the central government directed the DDA to survey all jhuggi (slum) clusters under its control. To date, 205 clusters have been surveyed, and the remaining 173 will be addressed within the next six months. Notable areas included in this survey are Lal Bagh Park, Sethi Camp, and Indira Vikas Colony.
The primary goal of the survey is to assess the population and household counts within these slum clusters. It will document the residents' status and their qualifications for resettlement or in-situ development schemes. Under the guidelines set by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), residents are eligible for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) flats if they can prove residency in their respective slums before January 1, 2015. The survey will also evaluate residents' financial situations to understand their ability to pay for housing and access housing finance.
To ensure accurate data collection, the selected agency will conduct door-to-door surveys and engage with the community through awareness drives. Residents will be asked to sign the survey forms, and their information will be recorded electronically. After the data is collected, it will be presented to the community for verification, ensuring that no households are overlooked in the process.
The DDA has previously implemented two in-situ rehabilitation projects at Jailorwala Bagh and Kalkaji, providing EWS flats to over 4,400 jhuggi dwellers. The ongoing project at Kathputli Colony is expected to be completed soon, further demonstrating the DDA's commitment to improving living conditions for slum residents.
This survey represents an important step in addressing the challenges faced by slum dwellers in Delhi. By gathering comprehensive data, the DDA aims to create better housing opportunities and enhance the overall quality of life for residents in these underserved communities.
