The Bengal Silicon Valley IT Hub in New Town, originally a 100-acre project, has doubled to 200 acres due to high demand from IT firms. 38 companies have received Letters of Intent, with nine already under construction. Major investors include Reliance, Airtel Nxtra, ST Telemedia, and NTT, alongside Infosys, which secured 50 acres. The project aims to generate 75,000 jobs, strengthening Kolkata's IT sector. With 91.8% occupancy across Bengal's 22 IT parks, the state is boosting infrastructure and connectivity to support continued growth, solidifying its position as an emerging tech hub.
The New Town area is rapidly transforming into a significant IT hub, with nearly all land allocated for the Bengal Silicon Valley project now in the hands of major technology companies. The Bengal Silicon Valley IT Hub is set to be a state-of-the-art technology center located in Action Area II of New Town. So far, Letters of Intent have been issued to 38 companies, with construction already underway for nine of them. Notable industry players such as Reliance, Airtel Nxtra, ST Telemedia, and NTT are among those making significant investments in the area. The project is expected to create approximately 75,000 jobs, significantly boosting local employment opportunities.
Infosys has been a key player in this development, securing 50 acres of land adjacent to the Bengal Silicon Valley. The company has already begun operations with a 400-seat office at Mani Casadona, located in Sector-1 of New Town, and plans for a larger campus are in progress. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance Kolkata's standing in India's IT landscape, as highlighted by state finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya during her recent Budget speech.
In addition to the Silicon Valley project, the state has celebrated the completion of several major IT parks, including the Kalyani IT Park (Phase II) and multiple parks in Sector V. These developments contribute to Bengal's growing reputation as a technology hub, with 22 IT parks, one hardware park, and two electronics manufacturing clusters (EMCs) now operational across the state. The overall occupancy rate for these IT parks stands at an impressive 91.8%, showcasing the demand for IT infrastructure in both tier-I and tier-II cities.
The state government is also focused on enhancing connectivity and infrastructure to support this growth. Initiatives to improve transport links and utilities in New Town are underway, ensuring that the area can accommodate the influx of companies and professionals. As the Bengal Silicon Valley project continues to develop, it is poised to play a crucial role in Kolkata's economic future, attracting more talent and investment to the region.
With these ambitious plans and ongoing projects, New Town is set to become a central player in India's technology sector, offering a robust environment for innovation and growth.
