Synopsis

The Airoli-Katai Naka Road project, aimed at improving connectivity between Airoli, Kalyan, Dombivli, Ambernath, and Badlapur, is progressing swiftly. Phase I, a 3.43-km stretch with a 0.935-km elevated road and twin tunnels (1.68 km each), is 91.5% complete. Phase II, a 2.57-km elevated link from Airoli Bridge to Thane-Belapur Road, is 82% complete, with a projected finish by late 2025, while Phase I will conclude by early 2026. Phase III, a 6.3-km elevated road, will connect NH 4 to Katai Naka. Once completed, the project will reduce travel time by 30 minutes and ease congestion for daily commuters in the region.

The Airoli-Katai Naka Road project, which is anticipated to provide much-needed relief to motorists travelling from Airoli towards Kalyan, Dombivli, Ambernath, and Badlapur, has been progressing swiftly, according to officials.

Phase I of the development encompasses the construction of a 3.43-kilometre stretch connecting Thane-Belapur Road to National Highway 4 (NH-4). The elevated segment of this road, featuring three lanes in each direction, measures 0.935 kilometres in length. Additionally, Phase I incorporates twin tunnels, each comprising four lanes in either direction, spanning 1.68 kilometres.

An official from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) mentioned that the elevated section had already been completed, while work on the tunnel portion was ongoing. The official stated that 91.5% of the tunnel work had been accomplished thus far.

Phase II of the project involves the development of a 2.57-kilometre elevated link extending from Airoli Bridge towards Thane-Belapur Road. According to the MMRDA, the construction, which is being carried out by J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd, has achieved 82% completion.

The MMRDA official further informed that Phase I and Phase II were projected to be completed by early 2026 and late 2025, respectively.

Phase III of the project features a fully elevated road, measuring 6.30 kilometres, that will connect NH 4 to Katai Naka at Kalyan-Shil Road. The comprehensive Airoli-Katai Naka Road project was initiated in November 2017.

Once the entire project is completed, it is expected to reduce travel time by up to 30 minutes. It will incorporate two tunnels and an elevated road. The section between Thane-Belapur Road and NH 4 will span 3.43 kilometres, while the segment from Airoli Bridge to Thane-Belapur Road will cover 2.57 kilometres. The twin tunnels, each 1.69 kilometres in length, will include three lanes alongside an additional emergency lane. These tunnels, which will run beneath Parsik Hill, are intended to ease traffic congestion in areas such as Kalyan, Dombivli, Ambernath, and Badlapur, particularly during the morning peak hours.

Designed to meet the growing demands of the increasing population in and around Kalyan-including regions like Dombivli, Vithalwadi, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, and Badlapur-the Airoli-Katai Naka project aims to enhance overall connectivity and traffic management across these corridors.
