Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) is implementing an AI-powered Video Analytics System to prevent unauthorised access to Metro tracks following security breaches, protests, and suicide incidents. Pune Metro, serving 1.6 lakh passengers daily, has faced rising trespassing and safety concerns. The AI system, equipped with motion sensors and real-time surveillance, will detect unauthorised entries, suspicious behaviour, and unattended objects, enabling swift security responses. It will also help optimise train schedules by identifying peak travel hours. Officials believe this technology will enhance passenger safety, streamline security, and improve overall Metro operations in Pune.
Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), also known as Maha Metro, is set to introduce an AI-powered Intermediate Video Analytics System designed to prevent unauthorised access to its Metro tracks. This decision has followed multiple security breaches, including a protest that took place earlier this week, which caused service disruption for hours, and a suicide incident that occurred in the past month.
Shravan Hardikar, the managing director of MMRCL, mentioned that the organisation was in the process of fast-tracking the implementation of an AI-based risk management system. He stated that trespassing on railway tracks had long been a concern, and such issues were now beginning to surface on Metro tracks as well.
Over the past three years, Pune Metro has established itself as a preferred mode of transportation, owing to its efficient services and eco-friendly operations. With its combination of elevated and underground routes, Pune Metro caters to approximately 1.6 lakh passengers daily and has significantly enhanced connectivity throughout the city. However, there has been a noticeable increase in incidents such as trespassing, suicides, and protests within Metro premises. These growing safety concerns have necessitated the adoption of advanced surveillance measures.
Officials from Maha Metro noted that AI-driven video analytics, equipped with motion sensors, would assist in detecting unauthorised entries onto the tracks, identifying suspicious behaviour, and spotting unattended objects in real time. This technology would enable security staff to respond swiftly, thereby mitigating risks to passengers and Metro employees.
It would also allow for the efficient deployment of security personnel and the detection of unattended objects to avert potential security threats. In addition to enhancing security, the AI-powered system would assist Metro authorities in optimising train schedules by identifying peak travel hours.
Officials are optimistic that the implementation of this advanced risk management system will not only prevent unauthorised access but also provide a safer and more reliable commuting experience for Pune's residents.
