The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued an INR 85 crore tender for the operation and maintenance of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project over five years. Responsibilities include firefighting systems, patrolling, towing, lane marking, and signage upkeep. While critical systems like tunnel ventilation, SCADA, and UPS will remain under the current contractor for two more years, they will later be integrated into the new contract. Additionally, BMC has partnered with Tata Sons to enhance road dividers along a 4.4 km stretch and is seeking CSR support for open space development. These efforts aim to enhance Mumbai's key transport infrastructure and public spaces.
Earlier this week, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) floated a tender valued at INR 85 crore for the operation and maintenance of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project. The contract will cover a period of five years. The 10.6 km-long high-speed corridor, which has been partially opened in phases this month, had so far been maintained by the BMC.
As per the guidelines detailed in the new tender, the selected contractor will be accountable for regular inspections, maintenance of the firefighting systems, towing operations, deployment of patrolling vans, marking of vehicular lanes, and the painting and maintenance of existing road signs. A civic official mentioned that the maintenance work will be financed through funds allocated to the Coastal Road Department in the BMC's annual budget.
According to BMC officials, several critical components-such as the tunnel ventilation system, diesel generating (DG) sets, the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system that enables real-time data monitoring, and the uninterruptible power supply (UPS)-will continue to be maintained by the existing contractor for an additional two years before they are incorporated into the new contract.
In related news, BMC has partnered with Tata Sons Ltd and its affiliates to enhance the aesthetics of the road dividers along a 4.4 km stretch from Priyadarshini Park to Worli. Moreover, the corporation has sought corporate social responsibility (CSR) support from various businesses to develop open spaces along the corridor.
As parts of the coastal road gradually become operational, BMC's efforts, coupled with partnerships like Tata Sons Ltd and other CSR initiatives, are geared towards enhancing infrastructure and public spaces in one of Mumbai's key transport corridors.
