The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art double-decker flyover in Mira Bhayander, aiming to revolutionise urban mobility. This innovative infrastructure integrates Metro Line-9 with road transport, featuring a shared pier structure-a first in transit solutions. Spanning approximately 1 kilometre, the flyover is designed to alleviate traffic congestion by bypassing major bottlenecks and enhancing connectivity. It boasts advanced safety features, including reinforced concrete anti-crash barriers, reflective signage, and superior lighting. Part of the ambitious Metro Line-9 project, this flyover exemplifies next-generation urban transport planning, ensuring both efficiency and safety.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art double-decker flyover in Mira Bhayander. Under the guidance of Honorable Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde and Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, this advanced infrastructure integrates Metro Line-9 with road transport, promising to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity. The flyover, extending approximately 1 kilometre from Sai Baba Nagar Metro Station near S.K. Stone Junction to Shivar Garden, features a shared pier structure-a first in transit solutions-seamlessly combining metro and road infrastructures.
This flyover exemplifies next-generation urban transport planning, ensuring both efficiency and safety. Constructed on the same pillars as the Metro Line-9 viaduct, it optimises space and structural efficiency. The 17-metre-wide carriageway provides 2+2 lanes for smooth traffic flow. Integrated road safety features include reinforced concrete anti-crash barriers, reflective signage, lane markings, speed limit indicators, an advanced drainage system to prevent water accumulation, rumble strips and speed breakers at ramps to regulate vehicle speed, and light poles at 25-metre intervals to ensure superior visibility for safer night travel.
Strategically, the flyover bypasses three major traffic bottlenecks-SK Stone Junction, Kanakia Junction, and Shivar Garden Junction-drastically reducing travel time and alleviating congestion. It ensures smoother transit for a growing urban population, meeting the increasing demand for efficient transport infrastructure. Faster commutes and reduced fuel consumption contribute to a greener, more sustainable transport ecosystem.
This flyover is part of MMRDA's ambitious Metro Line-9 project, connecting Dahisar East to Mira Bhayander. The project includes three flyovers, designed to enhance road connectivity while ensuring seamless metro integration: Flyover 1 (Pleasant Park to Silver Park Signal) has been operational since August 2024; Flyover 2 has been recently inaugurated; and Flyover 3 is scheduled for completion by August 2025.
Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, emphasised MMRDA's commitment to building infrastructure that not only meets today's needs but is future-ready. He described the double-decker flyover as a significant achievement, combining efficiency, sustainability, and advanced engineering. With metro operations soon to commence on the second deck, he anticipates a complete transformation in urban transport for Mira Bhayander.
