The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched Abhay Yojana, offering a 50% concession on late penalty charges for property tax defaulters who clear their dues between March 10-31, 2025. However, only full payments qualify for the discount. Amidst ongoing legal action against defaulters, NMMC has also introduced the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) to simplify tax payments. Citizens can now pay via UPI, online banking, debit/credit cards, and mobile wallets through the NMMC website and mobile app. A 24/7 helpline (022-62531727) has been set up for assistance. These initiatives aim to boost tax collection, improve transparency, and enhance civic administration.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has rolled out a new scheme for property tax defaulters within its jurisdiction. The scheme Abhay Yojana, announced by Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr Kailash Shinde will offer a 50% concession on late penalty charges for defaulters who clear their entire due between Mar 10, 2025 and Mar 31, 2025.
Authorities have clarified that the concession extends only to the penalty charges, not the principal outstanding. Furthermore, partial payments will not be considered under this scheme, only lump sum payments will qualify for the offered benefits.
The Commissioner pointed out that despite repeated appeals from the Property Tax Department, a significant number of property owners continue to default on payments. Consequently, the NMMC has commenced legal action against those who have failed to pay their taxes, with special focus on persistent defaulters.
There are currently more than three and a half lakh registered properties within the limits of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Although facilities for property tax payment are available across all department offices and online platforms, citizens had reportedly faced various difficulties in making online payments under the existing system.
In response to these challenges, Dr Kailash Shinde directed the introduction of the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS). This newly implemented system is designed to simplify property tax payments, enabling citizens to access information regarding their property tax details, outstanding amounts, payment deadlines, and more. A special helpline number-022-62531727-has also been launched to address property owners' concerns and provide assistance throughout the week from Monday to Sunday between 10 am and 6 pm, including on holidays.
The Bharat Bill Payment System offers property owners several payment options to settle their dues conveniently. Citizens can now pay through online banking, UPI, credit cards, debit cards, and mobile wallets. Additionally, payments can be made from the comfort of home via the official NMMC website (nmmc.gov.in) and the 'My NMMC - My Navi Mumbai' mobile application. This initiative eliminates the need for property owners to visit tax collection divisional offices, thereby saving time and streamlining the payment process. Receipts for payments made through this system will be issued immediately.
With the introduction of both the Abhay Yojana and the Bharat Bill Payment System, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has taken a significant step towards simplifying property tax recovery and encouraging timely payments. Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailash Shinde has emphasised the importance of these initiatives in strengthening civic administration and fostering transparency. Citizens are being urged to clear their dues promptly and support the city's ongoing development efforts.
