Synopsis

Maharashtra CM Shri Devendra Fadnavis recently announced that most of Mumbai's 374-km metro network will become operational by 2027, with several lines, including Metro Line 3 (Aqua), 7A, 4, and 4A, launching by year-end. Meanwhile, officials are considering extending the underground stretch of Metro Line 5 (Orange Line) from 2 km to 5 km to reduce demolition and displacement. The 24.9 km Orange Line, linking Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan, is expected to cut travel time to 35-40 minutes. Despite delays, completion is targeted for 2026-27.

At a recently held legislative assembly meeting, the Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis responded to queries concerning the development of the Mumbai Metro. He assured citizens that most of the 374-km metro network will become operational by 2027, with several lines scheduled to go operational by the end of this year. These include the Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) Phase 2 which will run from Arey to BKC, Metro Line 7A which will run from Dahisar to Mira Road, Metro Line 4 Phase 1 which will run from Kasarvadavli to Cadbury Junction and Metro Line 4A which will run from Gaimukh to Kasarvadali.

In related Mumbai metro news, officials are considering a proposal to extend the underground stretch of the Metro Line 5 (Orange Line) from 2 kilometers to 5 kilometers to avoid excessive demolition and displacement of people and structures in the region. The Orange Line, once operational, will run from Thane to Bhiwandi. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TCL) has been tasked with presenting a detailed report on the same.

Mumbai Metro Line 5 is a crucial transit corridor that aims to enhance connectivity between Thane and Kalyan via Bhiwandi. Spanning 24.9kms, it will run across 17 stations with interconnections with Metro Line 4 (Wadala to Kasarvadavli) and the proposed Metro Line 12 (Kalyan to Taloja), and the Central Railway Line.

The Mumbai Metro Orange Line is currently being developed in two phases. Phase 1 covers the Thane to Bhiwandi stretch. This section is nearing completion, with approximately 80% of the work finished. Phase 2 extends from Bhiwandi to Kalyan, which is currently in the planning stage.

The initial estimate for Mumbai Metro Line 5 was INR 8,416 crore. However, the inclusion of the 3-km underground segment was projected to increase costs by INR 1,727 crore. With the revised 5-km underground plan, the final cost is expected to rise further. The project is being funded by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

To further strengthen regional connectivity, Metro Line 5 is planned to be extended beyond Kalyan to Taloja and Ulhasnagar in the future. This expansion will integrate the Orange Line with other metro networks, improving last-mile connectivity for suburban commuters. Initially slated to be operational by 2025, the completion deadline has now been pushed to the end of 2026 or early 2027. Delays in land acquisition, planning modifications, and cost escalations have contributed to the revised timeline.

Currently, road travel between the two cities via Bhiwandi covers approximately 25 km and takes around 60-90 minutes, depending on traffic. In contrast, suburban train travel, though faster than road travel, is often overcrowded and lacks last-mile connectivity. The metro, once operational, is projected to cover the same distance in approximately 35-40 minutes, providing a more comfortable and reliable commuting experience.

With its many industries, business parks, and residential complexes, Thane is a well-developed residential and commercial center. In contrast, Kalyani-Bhiwani is a thriving industrial hub. This metro line will connect the residential areas to the industrial hubs making it easier for daily commuters to travel for work, education, and other opportunities. This improved accessibility is expected to boost real estate demand in Kalyan and encourage business growth in Thane.
