Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has announced that residential apartment complexes can now be connected to Metro stations via skywalks to enhance pedestrian safety and reduce traffic congestion. Several skywalks already exist, linking Metro stations to malls and business hubs. New projects will connect Dr. Ambedkar Balanagar Metro station to Phoenix Mall and LB Nagar station to Vasavi Anandanilayam. Discussions are ongoing for additional skywalks at Nagole, Durgam Cheruvu, and Kukatpally. This initiative aims to boost Metro usage, decrease private vehicle dependency, and create a more pedestrian-friendly Hyderabad.
Hyderabad has recently announced that residential properties, specifically apartment complexes, can now be linked to Metro stations via skywalks. This decision was made by Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) to improve pedestrian safety and alleviate traffic congestion throughout the city. The announcement was confirmed following a comprehensive mobility planning meeting attended by HMRL managing director NVS Reddy and HMDA metropolitan commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmed.
The initiative is part of a wider strategy aimed at enhancing public transport options and encouraging a reduction in private vehicle usage. Metro officials indicated that the construction of skywalks from Metro stations is being actively promoted to ensure safer and more convenient movement for pedestrians. It has been noted that several real estate companies have already expressed a keen interest in participating in this initiative.
Currently, skywalks have been established at various locations within the city. The Metro developer Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has constructed skywalks linking the Panjagutta, Hi-Tec City, and Irrum Manzil Metro stations to adjacent malls. Additionally, a skywalk built by Raheja connects the Raidurg Metro station to Mindspace, which accommodates 11 towers hosting international firms. The initiative has proven beneficial at Uppal Junction, where a circular skywalk developed by HMDA has significantly improved pedestrian access.
In the pipeline are several new projects involving the construction of skywalks. One such project will link the Dr Ambedkar Balanagar Metro station to the Phoenix/Landmark Mall, while another will connect the LB Nagar station to the upcoming Vasavi Anandanilayam complex, which is set to feature 12 towers, each consisting of 33 floors. Furthermore, L&T has disclosed that discussions are ongoing with various companies regarding similar projects at Nagole, (Uppal) Stadium, Durgam Cheruvu, and Kukatpally stations.
This ambitious plan to expand the network of skywalks reflects a commitment to creating a more pedestrian-friendly urban environment in Hyderabad. By facilitating better access to public transport, it is expected that residents will be encouraged to utilize the Metro system more frequently, thereby reducing reliance on personal vehicles. This reduction is anticipated to lead to decreased traffic congestion, which has long been a concern for city planners and residents alike.
