This approach is not unique to Kolhapur. Several other cities in India have launched similar schemes in recent years to boost tax collection and ease the burden on property owners. For example, in 2023, the Pune Municipal Corporation offered a 75% waiver on property tax penalties under its 'One Time Settlement Scheme,' resulting in the collection of over INR 100 crore in dues.

Similarly, the Bengaluru Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) rolled out a property tax amnesty scheme in late 2022, offering a 50% concession on penalties for delayed payments. The scheme helped BBMP collect over INR 200 crore in property taxes, significantly contributing to the city's revenue.

Municipalities across India have increasingly relied on such targeted schemes to meet their revenue goals, especially as cities face the dual challenge of rising urbanization and financial constraints. These schemes not only help in clearing backlogs but also encourage property owners to make timely payments in the future. The success of Kolhapur's initiative, as well as similar efforts in other cities, reflects the importance of innovative measures in achieving fiscal goals and improving municipal finances.
