The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has announced a 24-month timeline for asphalting inner roads in Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout (NPKL), despite claims that 80% of the work is complete. Residents, already facing years of delays, question the extended deadline. Similar infrastructure delays plague Peripheral Ring Road and Kempegowda International Airport Expansion, raising concerns over Bengaluru's urban planning. With over 12 million citizens, the city's infrastructure struggles continue, prompting calls for faster project execution. Election pressure may accelerate progress, but skepticism remains.
The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) is once again in the limelight for the delayed implementation of the Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout (NPK), a flagship urban development project in the city. The BDA has now called tenders for asphalt-ing inner roads in the outstanding blocks of the layout with a target completion period of 24 months. The revised schedule is causing worry among owners of sites, who have already endured years of delay and lack of infrastructure in the region.
The INR 15.99-crore project involves the construction of roads through the process of soil stabilizing in different blocks of NPKL. Though the BDA claims to have completed 80% of the work, citizens contend that roads in key sectors like Blocks 5A to I are yet to be paved.
The delay in NPKL is not in isolation. The completion of other projects by the BDA in Bengaluru has also been delayed, casting a doubt on the agency's capacity to fulfill the city's increasing infrastructural needs. A case in point is the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR), a crucial road project intended to decongest traffic and ensure improved connectivity to different parts of Bengaluru. Initially proposed to be finished in phases, the project has also been delayed at various stages in land acquisition, construction, and getting clearances. This has been causing traffic inconvenience to residents of areas such as Bellandur and Marathahalli, who had been hoping that the PRR would ease the traffic congestion on arterial roads.
In addition, the Kempegowda International Airport Expansion project has also been delayed in the same vein. The expansion was initially supposed to be ready by 2021, but it has been pushed back multiple times, resulting in tremendous hassle for travelers. The delay has also raised concerns about Bengaluru's ability to handle the growing number of passengers, as the airport is operating at full capacity.
BDA officials however are confident in their ability to get the job done. BDA Executive Engineer Ashok CN told reporters that the NPKL asphalting work would be done in six months, in spite of the 24-month deadline officially announced. He contended that even though the contractors will finish the job in six months.
With over 12 million citizens, Bengaluru is one of India's fastest-developing cities, placing its infrastructure under tremendous strain. Residents of the city, especially in newer developments like NPKL, are demanding quicker project delivery to serve their basic requirements, including roads, water, and sewage.
