Synopsis

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has refuted claims circulating on social media regarding an exemption from property tax, clarifying that all property owners and occupiers must continue to pay as per existing regulations. The MCD said that property tax constitutes nearly a quarter of its revenue and is crucial for its operations, particularly amid financial constraints such as pending salaries and contractor dues. With outstanding dues exceeding INR 14,000 crore, MCD highlighted the necessity of financial stability for maintaining essential services. Property owners have been urged to file tax returns on a self-assessment basis and make payments by the end of March 2025 to avoid penalties.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has dismissed reports that suggested an exemption from property tax, affirming that all property owners and occupiers are bound to pay it as per prevailing laws. In an official statement, the civic body advised residents to ignore misleading information spreading across social media platforms.

Amidst mounting financial challenges, including overdue salaries of municipal employees and outstanding contractor payments, the MCD reiterated that property tax remains a crucial revenue source, contributing nearly 25% of its total income.

MCD has been receiving numerous inquiries from the public regarding their tax obligations, and it reaffirmed that there have been no modifications to its applicability.

Each year, as part of its budgetary process, the civic body determines the levy of taxes and duties. The tax structure for the financial year 2024-25 was finalised in February 2024 when the budget was passed. Likewise, during a meeting held last month, MCD decided on the taxes and duties for the financial year 2025-26.

With outstanding dues surpassing INR 14,000 crore, the civic body has underscored the importance of financial stability in sustaining essential services, including sanitation, road maintenance, and drainage systems.

MCD has urged all property owners and occupiers to submit their property tax returns on a self-assessment basis and complete their payments by the end of March 2025 to avoid penalties.
