The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Slum Rehabilitation Authority (MMR SRA), established in 2020, aims to eliminate slums and improve living conditions in areas outside BMC limits, including Vasai-Virar. Under the scheme, eligible residents will receive 300 sq. ft. free housing with modern amenities. However, low awareness has led to underutilization in Vasai-Virar. A recent workshop by MMR SRA and VVMC informed citizens, developers, and officials about the scheme. Additionally, VVMC is clearing unauthorized structures and planning cluster developments at 40 identified sites. These initiatives are expected to transform Vasai-Virar into a slum-free, well-planned urban zone.
With the objective of transforming the cities in the Mumbai metropolitan area into slum-free zones and improving the living conditions of slum residents, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Slum Rehabilitation Authority (excluding the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation area) was established as an independent entity on 8th September 2020. As part of this initiative, local slum residents will receive a 300 sq. ft. free house, accompanied by various amenities such as a kindergarten, community hall, society office, library, skill development centre, advanced lift technology, play areas for children, and CCTV surveillance in building areas.
In the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation area, which has been expanding rapidly, local representatives and relevant government bodies are working diligently to enhance the living conditions of slum dwellers by providing them with proper housing through the implementation of various schemes. Although the Slum Rehabilitation Authority scheme has been in effect since 2020, many authorities and citizens were not aware of it until recently. Hence, the scheme has remained underutilised in this area.
To raise awareness, a workshop was organised earlier this week by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Slum Rehabilitation Authority and Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation to inform the public about the objectives, policies, and benefits of the slum rehabilitation scheme. The event took place at the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation headquarters in Virar West.
The programme witnessed the participation of a large number of slum owners, citizens, developers, and architects from the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation area. Additionally, several prominent figures, including Hon. Shri. Vilas Tare, Hon. Shri. Rajan Naik, Hon. Shri. Sneha Dubey-Pandit, Hon. Shri. Parag Soman (Chief Executive Officer of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Slum Rehabilitation Authority, Thane), and Hon. Shri. Anil Pawar (Commissioner of the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation), was present.
During the event, citizens received detailed information about the slum rehabilitation scheme, and their queries were addressed. An expert-led presentation provided an in-depth understanding of the scheme. To achieve the goal of making Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation 'slum-free,' the scheme will soon be approved by the S.P.A. Authority and implemented. Slum dwellers will then receive their rightful homes. Furthermore, developers and architects in the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation area were encouraged to participate in the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme, with assurances that they would not face any issues obtaining planning permission, as stated by Shri. Soman.
Apart from the proposed SRA based rehabilitation, the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) is undertaking an extensive demolition drive in the region. This aims to clear the VVMC area of unauthorised structures which are dangerous to the life of people residing in it. VVMC said that it has also appointed a consultant to identify encroached areas that can be developed as part of cluster development. The consultant has already identified 40 such sites for potential cluster development.
All of these efforts are expected to contribute significantly to the creation of a slum-free Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation.
