Noida steps up earthquake preparedness after 4.0-magnitude tremor raises safety concerns

Amid rising commercial and residential growth, authorities are tightening safety measures to ensure Noida's urban expansion aligns with disaster resilience standards.

In response to the recent 4.0-magnitude earthquake that caused panic among high-rise residents, Noida authorities have stepped up earthquake preparedness efforts across the city. District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma has directed the fire department and disaster management teams to coordinate with real estate developers, industrial units, and housing societies to strengthen structural safety measures.


The move comes as Noida falls under seismic zone 4, a high-risk category for earthquakes. The city's rapid vertical development, with numerous high-rise buildings, makes it particularly vulnerable. The tremors on February 17 startled residents, triggering alarms and forcing many to rush out of their homes. Following a District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) meeting, Verma instructed officials from the Noida and Greater Noida authorities to work with Apartment Owners' Associations (AOAs) and commercial property managers to develop disaster management plans. A report on the progress is to be submitted to the Additional District Magistrate (Finance) soon.

Additionally, the fire department has been directed to inspect all high-rise buildings and industrial areas to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Chief Fire Officer Pradeep Chaubey confirmed that inspections have started in Sector 4's industrial belt, with reports to be submitted in the coming weeks. Experts stress the need for earthquake-resistant construction in Noida due to its high seismic vulnerability. Madhuri Agarwal, an architecture professor at Gautam Buddha University, highlighted key structural reinforcements required in seismic zone 4, including: Reinforced concrete and steel framing for flexibility and strength, Shear walls and cross-bracing to absorb seismic forces, Deep pile foundations to prevent liquefaction during tremors, and Avoidance of soft stories, overhangs, and irregular designs that increase collapse risks

She emphasized that lightweight materials should be preferred to reduce earthquake impact, and soil testing should be mandatory before construction. Gaurav Gupta, General Secretary of CREDAI NCR, assured that all buildings in Noida follow the National Building Code (NBC), which sets specific construction standards based on seismic zones. Before granting occupancy and completion certificates, a structural audit is conducted by experts from IIT or equivalent institutions.

However, past reports have raised concerns about poor enforcement of these norms, particularly in unauthorized constructions and older buildings. While large developers follow NBC guidelines, smaller projects and builder flats may not always meet seismic safety requirements. Along with earthquake readiness, the fire safety preparedness of high-rises and industrial units is also under review. The February 17 tremor raised questions about whether older buildings and factory units are adequately equipped to handle emergencies. Frequent fire outbreaks in industrial areas have already led to increased safety inspections.

Noida's high-rise boom has transformed the city skyline, but experts warn that rapid urbanization must be matched with strict safety enforcement. Residents in societies such as Sector 50, Sector 137, and Greater Noida West have voiced concerns over building quality and compliance checks. Real estate analysts note that while Noida's housing market remains attractive due to affordability and proximity to Delhi, safety concerns could impact buyer confidence. Builders and developers are being urged to prioritize seismic safety measures, especially in under-construction projects.

Noida is currently witnessing a surge in commercial office leasing, with demand driven by IT firms, co-working spaces, and manufacturing units. However, structural safety concerns have led authorities to tighten building inspection norms, ensuring that new projects meet disaster-resilient construction standards.

With Noida's rapid expansion, ensuring earthquake preparedness and building safety will remain a key challenge for urban planners and real estate developers in the coming years.
