Efforts to extend the Kanpur Metro passenger service from Motijheel to Kanpur Central under Corridor-1 (IIT to Naubasta) are in the final stages. The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRC) has reported significant progress, with five underground stations-Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central-undergoing finishing works. System installations across departments are advancing quickly, ensuring that all critical facilities are ready before operations begin. Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of UPMRC, recently visited the Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section and the Chunniganj to Transport Nagar underground segment to monitor ongoing developments.
Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates, which are crucial for seamless metro travel, have already been installed at four of the five stations on this stretch. These gates enable passengers to enter the paid areas of stations by scanning QR codes on their tickets or using NCMC Go Smart Cards. The AFC system includes Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) and Ticket Office Machines (TOMs), which are expected to simplify the ticketing process and enhance user convenience.
Sushil Kumar, the Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRC), recently conducted an on-site inspection of the project. His visit covered the elevated section between Baradevi and Naubasta, as well as the underground stretch from Chunniganj to Transport Nagar Station, which is part of Corridor-1. During his assessment, he reviewed the progress of various departmental works and emphasised the need for a timely and high-quality completion.
A key feature of the metro service is its integration of technology to facilitate a smooth travel experience. Passengers will be able to purchase tickets through the Kanpur Metro mobile app, which is available on both Android and iOS platforms. Upon booking, the app generates a QR code that can be scanned at the AFC gates for entry. This innovation is expected to make metro travel more convenient, especially for regular commuters.
Apart from the ticketing systems, finishing works at the stations are nearing completion. This includes structural enhancements and the installation of essential equipment to ensure safety and operational efficiency. The Chunniganj to Kanpur Central segment forms a vital part of Corridor-1 and is expected to significantly reduce travel time for daily commuters, providing a faster, safer, and more reliable alternative to existing modes of transport.
The metro project is designed not only to improve urban mobility but also to contribute to the city's overall development. The addition of underground stations in prime locations like Naveen Market and Bada Chauraha highlights the strategic planning aimed at connecting key commercial and residential areas. The Nayaganj and Kanpur Central stations are expected to cater to a large volume of passengers, particularly those travelling to and from the city's railway station.
Kanpur Metro's introduction is anticipated to bring multiple benefits, including decongesting the city's roads, reducing air pollution, and providing an environmentally sustainable mode of transportation. With features like the NCMC Go Smart Card and mobile app integration, the project aims to align with modern urban transport systems globally.
While the official date for the launch of operations has yet to be announced, the current pace of work indicates that the project is in its final stages. Once operational, the metro service is expected to revolutionise public transportation in Kanpur, setting a benchmark for future urban transit projects in the region.
The UPMRC remains committed to completing the project with a focus on quality and efficiency. As Kanpur prepares for this transformative addition to its infrastructure, the metro promises to bring convenience, efficiency, and modernisation to the city's public transport system.
