Thane's road connectivity is set to improve with the nearing completion of the Vadpe-Majiwada expansion project on the Old Mumbai-Nashik Highway. Spanning 23.8 km, the project upgrades the highway to an eight-lane corridor with service roads and ten vehicular underpasses at key bottlenecks. The MSRDC also highlights complementary developments like the final 76-km stretch of the Samruddhi Mahamarg, linking Igatpuri to Thane and connecting to the Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway. With modern infrastructure, including bridges, flyovers, and innovative construction techniques, these projects aim to reduce congestion, enhance travel convenience, and drive regional economic growth, marking a transformative phase for Thane's road network.
Travelling through Thane's heavily congested roads is expected to become more convenient as the ambitious Vadpe-Majiwada expansion project on the Old Mumbai-Nashik Highway nears completion. Spanning 23.8 km, this project is designed to transform the highway into an eight-lane corridor with two-lane service roads flanking both sides. Additionally, ten newly developed vehicular underpasses, implemented as part of the plan, aim to ease bottlenecks and enhance the flow of traffic. According to an official from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), these underpasses have been constructed at key locations, like Walshin, Sonale, Kharegaon, Yewali Flyover, Saravali, Pimplas, Ovali, Mankoli Motagaon, Dive Gaon near the Petrol Pump, and Dive, covering a total approach road length of 8 km.
The MSRDC has focused on addressing the challenges posed by the heavy commercial traffic originating from Bhiwandi's warehouses, which often leads to severe congestion on this vital route. The underpasses, along with the expansion, are expected to provide significant relief to commuters once the project is completed in the coming months. Additionally, the development includes constructing three major bridges and a flyover-namely, the Kasheli Creek Bridge (817.5 metres), Kalwa Creek Bridge (199 metres), Vadpe Flyover (320 metres), and Railway Bridge (84.15 metres).
Complementing this effort is the near completion of the final 76-km stretch of the 701-km Samruddhi Mahamarg, which connects Igatpuri to Thane. This segment features a crucial 4.2-km spur linking the expressway to the under-construction Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway. Scheduled for completion by the end of January, this spur has been constructed with innovative techniques, including controlled blasting for levelling steep slopes. With over 98% of the work completed, this stretch is expected to significantly enhance connectivity with the Old Mumbai-Nashik Highway.
Both projects aim to reduce travel time while fostering economic growth. An MSRDC official shared that the high-speed infrastructure, coupled with planned wayside amenities, will enhance commuter convenience and promote regional development.
The Vadpe-Majiwada expansion project and the final stretch of the Samruddhi Mahamarg represent a transformative phase for Thane's road network. By integrating modern infrastructure, such as underpasses, bridges, and flyovers, with advanced design, these developments aim to mitigate the traffic challenges plaguing the area. The enhanced connectivity between major hubs like Mumbai, Thane, Nagpur, and Vadodara promises to not only ease commutes but also unlock economic opportunities along these corridors. Once operational, these projects are expected to redefine travel and economic activity in the region.
