Synopsis

The Z-Morh tunnel, connecting Gagangir to Sonamarg, is set to be inaugurated soon, marking a major milestone in improving Kashmir's connectivity. Reducing travel time to 15 minutes, the 6.5-km tunnel ensures Sonamarg remains accessible year-round, boosting tourism. Coupled with the upcoming Zoji-La tunnel, seamless connectivity between Srinagar and Leh will further enhance regional infrastructure. The Indian Railways has also made strides with the USBRL project, featuring the Chenab Bridge and advanced seismic technology, alongside plans for a Vande Bharat train tailored for Kashmir's conditions. Despite delays from security concerns, these initiatives promise improved accessibility, economic growth, and strategic resilience for the region.

In a major step toward improving connectivity in Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to inaugurate the 6.5-km Z-Morh tunnel between Gagangir and Sonamarg soon, aiming to establish Sonamarg as an all-weather tourist destination. The tunnel, which reduces travel time from hours to just 15 minutes, will ensure year-round accessibility even during heavy snowfall. Once the Zoji-La tunnel is completed, seamless connectivity between Srinagar and Leh will further boost the region's tourism and strategic infrastructure.

The Indian Railways has also advanced its efforts in the Valley. Earlier this week, a train successfully ran at a speed of 110 km/h on the Katra-Banihal section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that a specially designed Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat train with anti-freezing features will be operational shortly, ensuring year-round train services. He highlighted that safety and technological advancements, including anti-vibration seismic devices, have been prioritised in this Zone-V earthquake-prone area.

The USBRL project, estimated to cost INR 40,000 crore, involves notable achievements such as the world's highest railway arch bridge on the Chenab River and India's longest transportation tunnel. Additionally, the redevelopment of the Jammu station, set to be completed in the coming months, will provide eight modern platforms and enhanced facilities.

The Z-Morh tunnel's completion was delayed by security concerns, including an attack on workers last year, which claimed seven lives. Authorities now affirm that the project is secure and ready for inauguration. This development, coupled with improved rail connectivity, signifies a new era of progress for Kashmir and its strategic importance.

The upcoming inauguration of the Z-Morh tunnel and the advancements in the USBRL project highlight the Indian government's commitment to enhancing infrastructure and connectivity in Kashmir. These developments will not only promote tourism but also facilitate smoother movement for civilians and the military. Despite challenges, including security issues and the region's challenging terrain, innovative solutions have ensured progress. With such transformative projects nearing completion, Kashmir is set for improved accessibility, economic growth, and strategic resilience.
