HYDRAA officials demolished an illegal five-storey building in Ayyappa Society, Madhapur, citing severe breaches of building regulations and environmental concerns. The building, constructed on a 684-square-yard plot, lacked required parking, had a cellar illegally converted into a kitchen, and violated setbacks and drainage norms. HYDRAA officials recently carried out the demolition of an illegal five-storey building in Ayyappa Society, Madhapur. The demolition was prompted by multiple violations of building regulations, including court orders. The building, located on a 684-square-yard plot near the 100-feet road, was found to be in clear violation of safety and environmental standards. HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath, who supervised the operation, explained that the building was a clear example of violations at multiple levels, posing a serious threat to public safety and environmental health. "The building's design was not only unauthorised but also put both the public and the surrounding environment at risk," he said.
Further inspection revealed that the building had no setbacks, which are mandatory, and was also lacking a proper drainage system. "Faecal matter was flowing directly onto the road due to the absence of a functioning drainage system," Ranganath added. Environmental concerns were also a significant factor in the decision to demolish the structure, as it had been polluting a nearby lake due to poor waste management practices.
Despite being close to completion, the building had no authorised utility connections, which further highlighted the severity of its violations. The demolition came after the GHMC's Chandanagar circle issued show-cause notices, and directives from the Telangana High Court. A joint team from HYDRAA, the revenue department, and GHMC executed the demolition in response to persistent complaints from local residents.
This operation is part of a broader crackdown on illegal constructions across Hyderabad. In recent months, authorities have carried out several demolitions, especially in fast-developing areas like Madhapur and Serilingampally, which have seen a rise in unauthorized buildings. These actions follow complaints from residents and court orders, reflecting the city's increasing efforts to enforce building regulations and protect public safety.
In the past year, illegal constructions that failed to comply with safety and environmental standards have become a growing concern. Several structures have been found to be polluting water bodies and causing drainage issues, prompting authorities to step up their monitoring and enforcement efforts. Commissioner Ranganath warned that similar actions will be taken against other illegal buildings that compromise public safety and violate building regulations. "We are committed to continuing this crackdown and will not hesitate to take action against any structure that endangers the public or the environment," he stated.
