This initiative, covering nearly 20% of Maharashtra's participating villages, aims to modernize rural land records. The Nagpur division is set to witness a significant change in land ownership documentation with the launch of drone surveys under the central government's SVAMITVA scheme. This initiative aims to provide property cards to rural landowners using advanced geo-tagging technology. The SVAMITVA scheme is part of a broader effort by the Indian government to enhance land rights and improve the livelihoods of rural populations. In Maharashtra, nearly 20% of the villages involved in this initiative are located in the Nagpur division, which comprises 8,780 villages in total. Currently, 4,447 villages have completed their final review, while 5,343 have undergone the inquiry process. Notably, 607,075 income certificates have been issued to property holders, helping to streamline the documentation process.
The economic impact of the SVAMITVA scheme is already evident. To date, the scheme has generated revenue of INR 12.96 crore from 4,447 villages, with an additional INR 20.78 crore anticipated, bringing the total projected revenue to INR 33.74 crore. This revenue is expected to support local development projects and improve infrastructure in these areas.
Nagpur district is leading the way with the highest number of villages undergoing drone surveys, with 1,362 villages already mapped. Gadchiroli follows closely behind, with 1,359 villages in the survey process. Chandrapur is also making progress, with 903 villages in the final review stage. However, 773 villages in the division still await ground truthing and the completion of inquiries, essential steps for finalizing property records.
To ensure effective implementation of the SVAMITVA scheme, 407 camps have been established across the six districts of the Nagpur division. These camps, which take place every Thursday and on significant national holidays, are staffed by 814 officers dedicated to assisting residents with the process. This approach aims to maximize participation from beneficiaries and facilitate the smooth collection of revenue.
The SVAMITVA scheme not only aims to provide property rights but also seeks to empower rural communities by making land ownership documentation more accessible. By leveraging technology, the initiative is expected to reduce disputes over land ownership and provide a clearer framework for property rights in rural areas.
