The Bihar government has set a target to provide housing for all urban residents by August 2025 under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena announced that 148,630 houses have been completed, with construction underway on 117,974 more. A survey to identify overlooked beneficiaries will conclude by February 2025. Financial aid schemes include INR 2 lakh for landowners and institutional housing for slum dwellers. To address engineer shortages, the state has recruited 500 junior engineers and retired experts. The initiative aims to improve urban living standards and enhance infrastructure across Bihar.

As of now, the construction of 264,604 houses is in progress across various urban areas. Official reports indicate that 148,630 of these houses have already been completed, while work continues on 117,974 homes. In just the past three months, the government has seen a significant acceleration in construction, with 41,080 houses finished. If this pace continues, officials are optimistic about meeting the target deadline.
In addition to building new homes, the government is conducting a survey to identify individuals who may have been overlooked in the housing assistance programs. This survey is expected to conclude by the end of February 2025, ensuring that no one is left without support.
To assist those in need, the government has introduced various financial aid programs. Families who own land can receive INR 2 lakh for house construction, with INR 1.5 lakh funded by the central government and INR 50,000 from the state government. For those living in slums without land ownership, the government will provide housing through the institutional development program. Furthermore, the government is also developing residences for the economically weaker sections under its real estate policy.
Addressing the challenge of a shortage of engineers in local urban bodies, the state has taken proactive measures. The government is utilizing the expertise of retired engineers and has recruited nearly 500 junior engineers to support the housing initiative. This strategy aims to enhance the efficiency of the construction process and ensure timely completion of housing projects.
The commitment to providing housing for all reflects the government's broader goal of improving living conditions in urban areas and supporting the most vulnerable populations. As the project progresses, the government is hopeful that it will not only meet its housing targets but also contribute to the overall development of urban infrastructure in Bihar.
