Synopsis

To alleviate Bengaluru's congestion, the Karnataka State Cabinet has approved a plan to develop satellite towns with enhanced road and rail connectivity. The towns of Devanahalli, Nelamangala, Hoskote, Doddaballapur, and Magadi will be included in this initiative. The Greater Bengaluru Development Authority (GBDA) will oversee the development of areas within Ramanagara district, integrating the Bidadi Smart City project. Spanning over 8,943 acres, the project aims to provide employment opportunities and create a well-planned urban environment. The township, located along the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway, will follow a work-live-play; model, with a globally recognised firm appointed to draft the master plan. The initiative is a major step towards sustainable urban expansion.

In an effort to reduce congestion in Bengaluru, the Karnataka State Cabinet has sanctioned a plan to establish satellite towns that will be well-connected by road and rail. As part of this initiative, the towns of Devanahalli, Nelamangala, Hoskote, Doddaballapur, and Magadi are set to undergo significant development.

Following the Cabinet meeting held earlier this week, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil informed the media that the Greater Bengaluru Development Authority (GBDA) will oversee the development of Ramanagara district, incorporating areas such as Bidadi Hobli, Byramangala, Bannigiri, Hosur, Kempaiah Palya, and Harohalli Hobli under the 'Greater Bengaluru Suburban Project.'

Patil highlighted that, in accordance with the 2024-25 state budget, the government has committed to developing satellite towns surrounding Bengaluru, including Devanahalli, Nelamangala, Hoskote, Doddaballapur, and Bidadi. These towns will be transformed into well-planned urban hubs with robust road and rail infrastructure, thereby fostering employment opportunities.

A government notification confirmed that the Bidadi Smart City project will be integrated into the broader Greater Bengaluru development scheme, positioning it as a crucial component of the urban expansion plan.

As part of this initiative, approximately 6,023 acres of land will be acquired and developed across Bidadi, Byramangala, Bannigeri, Hosur, KG Kanchugaranahalli, Aralalusandra, Kempayyanapalya, and Harohalli. This will form a section of a larger 8,943-acre development, with key areas designated for public utilities such as settlements, water bodies, and parks.

The proposed township, falling under the GBDA's jurisdiction, will encompass ten villages in Ramanagara district, including Byramangala, Bannigere, Hosur, and Vaderahalli. The strategic location along the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway, approximately 30'50 kilometres from Bengaluru, enhances its potential as an ideal satellite city.

Designed around the 'work-live-play' concept, the township aims to offer a balanced lifestyle. To ensure world-class urban planning, the government intends to select a globally reputed firm through a competitive bidding process. This firm will be responsible for crafting a master plan aligned with international standards.

A high-level committee, chaired by the additional chief secretary of Karnataka, will supervise the project's execution. The committee will consist of representatives from various departments and institutions to facilitate smooth implementation.

The cabinet has granted in-principle approval to commence preliminary work on this large-scale project. The GBDA will oversee all development activities within the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region (BMR) to ensure a well-coordinated urban expansion plan.

This transformative initiative is a substantial step towards addressing Bengaluru's infrastructure concerns while fostering sustainable urban development in the region.
