IT and Digital Services Minister Palanivel Thiagarajan recently announced that the government would prepare a comprehensive project plan for a world-class IT complex in Coimbatore within the next two to three months. Speaking at the inauguration of iMerit's 12th branch, a company expert in AI data solutions, he stressed the increasing demand for premium office spaces in Coimbatore.

Developers will construct the proposed three-million-square-foot IT complex within the ELCOT SEZ in Coimbatore. Highlighting the Chief Minister's vision, the minister stated that this facility would cater to the rising needs of the IT sector by offering state-of-the-art infrastructure. Efforts are underway to select a suitable real estate marketing firm to ensure the project meets global standards. The government expects to complete the plan soon, underscoring its proactive approach to addressing industry demands.

The minister also addressed challenges related to unused land within several ELCOT SEZs. Despite the scarcity of industrial plots in prime locations, he pointed out that certain firms had failed to develop buildings on the allocated land. To resolve this issue, the government has begun reclaiming such unused parcels and reallocating them to companies actively pursuing industrial development. This approach aims to enhance land use and ensure the efficient deployment of available resources.

Discussing the growing relevance of artificial intelligence, the minister highlighted the immediate demand for professionals to feed data into AI systems. He predicted robust job creation in this sector in the near term, as the industry continues to expand. However, he acknowledged potential challenges in the future, noting that advancements in computing power, chip technology, and energy resources could eventually lead to AI impacting employment. He reassured that this scenario remains at least two decades away, as machines currently lack the capacity to process complex human-like information.

The minister further reinforced India's immense potential in the global software industry. He remarked that the country's abundant skilled workforce positions it as a preferred destination for firms relocating operations from China. With this competitive edge, India is likely to benefit from these opportunities for at least the next 15 years. He expressed optimism about the country's ability to attract significant international investments and sustain its dominance in the software sector.

This announcement reflects the government's vision to transform Coimbatore into a leading hub for IT and digital innovation. By reclaiming unused land, fostering AI-driven employment, and leveraging India's software expertise, the state aims to create a dynamic ecosystem that drives economic growth, promotes technological advancements, and strengthens its global competitiveness.
