The Atal Smart City, developed under the central government's Smart City Mission, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. Located in Raiya, Rajkot, the project, spread across 930 acres, has a modern infrastructure with all essential amenities. It includes a road network of 18.21km, an 8.51km BRTS corridor, and a recycled water system aimed at conserving potable water. Key features also include stormwater drainage, power ducts, and dedicated cycle tracks. The project, costing INR 550 crore, is expected to accommodate around four lakh residents, with completion set for November 2024.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel recently inaugurated the Atal Smart City, a key project under the central government's Smart City Mission, located in Raiya, Rajkot. Built with modern infrastructure and essential amenities, the city spans 930 acres and has been developed at a cost of INR 550 crore. The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) anticipates that approximately four lakh people will eventually settle in the area.
The Atal Smart City project, which began on August 23, 2019, is expected to be completed by November 2024. It is surrounded by private land, with 50 plots allocated for various purposes, including four for residential use, six for commercial purposes, seven for social infrastructure, and 26 for gardening. In addition, the project has preserved the natural drainage system by planting trees along the edges to prevent encroachment. The smart city also features a power duct system, eliminating the need for overhead electricity lines and allowing the future implementation of double-decker buses on the roads.
The roads within the city are designed to accommodate future transport needs, with widths ranging from 18 metres to 60 metres. The infrastructure has been developed to eliminate problems such as water leakage and electricity theft. One of the standout features of the smart city is its integrated road network, which spans 18.21km and sets a standard for smart roads in other cities across the country. Part of the Mass Transport System (MTS) includes an 8.51km BRTS corridor, along with 15 sophisticated bus stops, improving public transportation in the area.
To address water management, the city has introduced a dual water supply system, with one line for potable water and another for recycled water. This initiative aims to save 30% of potable water by using recycled water for non-drinking purposes. A 56 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) has been established, along with a tertiary treatment plant to further purify the recycled water. The stormwater drainage system has also been designed to conserve rainwater, guiding it to Atal Sarovar 1 to 3, while the installation of power and utility ducts ensures that future maintenance work will not require road digging.
Additionally, the city promotes sustainable transport with a 14km cycle track and footpaths on both sides of the roads, encouraging residents to adopt eco-friendly modes of transport. These features, combined with robust infrastructure, make the Atal Smart City a model for future urban development.
