The Mumbai-bound section of the Thane Creek Bridge, which serves as a vital link between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, is nearing completion and is expected to open by the end of February. This follows the earlier opening of the Navi Mumbai-bound section in October. The new bridge, constructed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), aims to ease the growing traffic congestion across the Vashi Bridge corridor, which sees approximately 64,300 vehicles daily. Upon completion, the bridge will increase the total capacity to 12 lanes, significantly improving traffic flow in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Two months after the Navi Mumbai-bound section of the Thane Creek Bridge was opened to motorists on October 13, authorities have announced that the Mumbai-bound section is nearing completion. The new section is expected to open by the end of February, hopefully easing traffic congestion on the crucial Vashi Bridge corridor within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). According to MSRC officials, the superstructure is complete with final works such as the installation of crash barriers, expansion joints, lighting and electrical systems are underway.
Currently, two bridges serve as the primary conduits for vehicular movement across this stretch. The first bridge, completed in 1973, has only two lanes and has been closed to regular traffic for nearly two decades due to structural concerns. The second bridge, operational since 1997, has six lanes (three in each direction). In 2020, MSRDC initiated work on a twin creek bridge, awarding the INR 559 crore project to Larsen & Toubro. Together, the two bridges span a cumulative 3.14 kilometres and flank the older 1997 structure.
Once the Mumbai-bound portion of the fourth creek bridge becomes operational, the total capacity of the creek crossing will rise to 12 lanes-six in each direction-ensuring smoother travel between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
Apart from the bridges, the Forest Department recently greenlit the Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project. The INR 18,800 crore project will feature a 11.8km underground twin tunnel, featuring three lanes each, beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The ambitious project will be completed in three phases by 2028. Once ready commuters can expect to reduce the distance travelled from 23kms on average to just 12kms.
Civic authorities have been working towards improving connectivity within the region and to other parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. In September this year, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) awarded several infrastructure projects totaling INR 12,500 crores. The projects entail the widening of 50km of roads, with the aim of reducing congestion and improving connectivity in the area.
The creek is set to welcome new bridges that will connect important hubs within the region such as Kasarvadavali to Kharbao, Gaimukh to Payegaon, andKolshet to Kalher. Other projects include, an elevated road from Kalyan-Murbad Road to Badlapur Road overbridge, elevated road from NH-4 (old) to Katai Naka, an extension of the Eastern Freeway from Ghatkopar to Thane and the Balkum-Gaimukh Thane Coastal Road.
As the region gears up to accommodate growing vehicular traffic, these projects promise to streamline travel, reduce travel distances, and strengthen links between key hubs. Once completed, these infrastructural upgrades will not only ease daily commutes but also bolster economic activity and improve the overall quality of life for residents in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
