The UL International Conclave on Sustainable Construction took place at the Indian Institute of Infrastructure and Construction in Chavara, Kollam, aiming to foster a resilient and sustainable future for Kerala. Inaugurated by Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan, the three-day event emphasized inclusive development aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. The conclave gathered national and international experts to discuss sustainable practices and policies, featuring panel discussions and technical sessions on innovative construction techniques. Collaborating with esteemed institutions, the event celebrated the centenary of the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society, showcasing its extensive contributions to infrastructure development.
The UL International Conclave on Sustainable Construction was held at the Indian Institute of Infrastructure and Construction (IIIC) in Chavara, Kollam, as Kerala aims to establish a more resilient and sustainable future. During the inauguration of the three-day event, Kerala Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan underscored the importance of development that is inclusive, reflecting a fundamental principle of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. He reiterated Kerala's dedication to inclusive growth, environmental stewardship, and a variety of strategies to address the challenges of climate change.
This Conclave unites a prominent assembly of national and international experts to explore sustainable construction practices and policies. Held as part of the Uralungal Society's centenary celebrations, it seeks to address Kerala's specific climate challenges while formulating development strategies that are both environmentally friendly and resilient to future ecological changes.
Among the notable participants are Mark Goldman, Director of ESRI Denver Industries Solutions in the USA; Prof. Narayanan Neithalath from the University of Arizona; Prof. Pat Rajeev, Chair of the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering at Swinburne University in Australia; Dr. Manoranjan Parida, Director of CSIR-CRRI; Dr. L. P. Singh, Director of NCCBM; and Prof. Koshy Varghese from IIT Madras, along with other distinguished figures from prestigious academic institutions worldwide.
The conclave also featured experts from leading construction firms, including Joseph Martin, Senior Director of the ESG Platform at PwC India; Amit Barde, Head of Precast at Larsen & Toubro; Kalyan Vaidyanathan, Business Development Director at Bentley Systems India; and Manoj Verman, a Tunneling and Rock Engineering Expert from the ISRM Commission on Hard Rock Excavation. Additionally, prominent Kerala personalities like Dr. Jayakumar, former MD and CEO of the Vizhinjam Port Project, shared their insights.
The agenda includes four panel discussions, seven technical sessions, and parallel skill-development workshops. The first day features a panel discussion on "Building Today with Tomorrow: Strategic Insights on Sustainable Infrastructure as the Pillar for a Developed and Resilient India and Kerala," moderated by Srikanth APV, Director of Global Operations at Singapore Arcadis. Esteemed speakers such as Dr. Jayakumar, Joseph Martin, and Prof. Abhilash S. Nair from IIM Kozhikode contributed their perspectives.
Another panel discussion titled "Innovation in Low Carbon Materials and Design: Challenges and Opportunities" included experts like Dr. Sivakumar Kanthaswamy from L&T Construction, Dr. R. Manikandan from Dalmia Cements, Dr. L. P. Singh, Prof. Pat Rajeev, and Prof. Narayanan Neithalath.
Organized in collaboration with respected institutions such as Arizona State University, IIT Madras, NIT Calicut, and NICMAR University, this event is part of a series of international conferences celebrating the centenary of the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society.
The Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS), which has been in operation for a century, is Asia's largest labour co-operative and the second largest in the Industries and Utilities sector. As a Total Solution Provider (TSP) for infrastructure development and management projects, ULCCS has successfully completed over 7,500 projects throughout its history.
