Synopsis

The Coimbatore Metro Rail project advances as land acquisition surveys are slated to begin in March 2025. Covering 34.8 kilometers across two corridors, the project will connect Ukkadam to Neelambur and Coimbatore Junction to Valiyampalayam. Officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited and local authorities are collaborating to align the metro route, integrate with bus stands, and ensure minimal disruption. Land along Avinashi Road and Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam Road is prioritized in phase one. Inspections and community engagement are underway to address public concerns. Expected to boost connectivity and economic growth, the project marks a pivotal step in modernizing Coimbatore's transport infrastructure.

The Coimbatore Metro Rail project is moving forward as the survey for land acquisition is set to begin soon. This announcement came from Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran following a coordination meeting with representatives from various departments, including Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the National Highways Department, and local authorities.

The meeting primarily addressed key issues such as land acquisition, the locations of stations, and the alignment of the metro route. CMRL has plans to establish its project office within the corporation office campus, with another potential site on Dr. Nanjappa Road. This strategic move aims to enhance collaboration among the different departments involved in the project. The corporation has requested that CMRL cover the costs associated with the land acquisition survey. Once the necessary funds are deposited, the survey will begin, which will include mapping the land, identifying existing utilities, and planning for any necessary relocations.

As part of the preparations, CMRL officials conducted inspections of the Gandhipuram and Ukkadam bus stands. These inspections focused on areas along the proposed metro rail route. Commissioner Prabakaran assured that the alignment of the metro route would not interfere with the operations of the Gandhipuram bus stand. However, adjustments will need to be made for the new Ukkadam Bus Stand, which is planned to integrate with the metro rail system.

The land acquisition process is scheduled to start in March, targeting key areas along Avinashi Road and the Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam Road. This acquisition is part of the first phase of the metro rail project, which will cover a total length of 34.8 kilometers. The first phase consists of two main corridors: Corridor-I will connect the Ukkadam Bus Stand to the Neelambur Integrated Station via the airport, spanning 20.4 kilometers. Corridor-II will link the Coimbatore Railway Junction to Valiyampalayam Pirivu, covering an additional 14.4 kilometers.

The Coimbatore Metro Rail project is expected to significantly improve public transportation in the city, making it easier for residents to travel across various parts of Coimbatore. The integration of the metro with existing bus stands aims to provide a seamless travel experience for commuters. Local officials are optimistic that the project will not only enhance connectivity but also promote economic growth in the region.

As the project progresses, community engagement will be crucial. Residents and business owners in the areas affected by the land acquisition will be kept informed about the developments and any changes that may impact them. Public consultations may be held to address concerns and gather feedback, ensuring that the project meets the needs of the community while advancing the city's infrastructure.

In conclusion, the Coimbatore Metro Rail project represents a significant step towards modernizing the city's transport system. With the survey for land acquisition set to begin, stakeholders are hopeful that the project will proceed smoothly and contribute positively to Coimbatore's development in the coming years.
