Synopsis

Mumbai's second cable-stayed bridge, the Reay Road overbridge, is set to open in February 2025, replacing a century-old British-era structure. Built entirely on land, this six-lane, 385-meter bridge features pedestrian footpaths, a central pylon system, and architectural LED lighting. Constructed at a cost of INR 175 crore by MahaRail, the bridge enhances connectivity between Barrister Nath Pai Road and the Eastern Freeway. Its innovative design, using limited piers and cable-stayed technology, minimized disruption and expedited construction. The Reay Road bridge promises to improve traffic flow while adding a striking architectural feature to Mumbai's skyline, marking a milestone in the city's infrastructure development.

Mumbai is set to introduce its second cable-stayed bridge, the first of its kind to be constructed entirely on land. The new road overbridge at Reay Road, situated in South Mumbai along the harbour railway line, is expected to open next month, offering improved connectivity and adding a striking architectural feature to the city's landscape. This bridge will replace a dilapidated British-era structure, marking an important milestone in the city's infrastructure development.

Construction of the bridge began in February 2022 and has been progressing smoothly under the supervision of Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (MahaRail). The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation entrusted MahaRail with the task of reconstructing the old road overbridges. Speaking at an event in Nagpur earlier this week, MahaRail CEO Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal revealed that the construction is nearly complete and that the bridge would be ready for vehicular traffic by February.

While Mumbai already boasts the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link, the Reay Road overbridge distinguishes itself as the first cable-stayed bridge in the city built entirely on land. With a span of 385 metres, including two ramps, the six-lane bridge features pedestrian footpaths and was constructed at a cost of INR 175 crore. The design integrates advanced technology, including a central pylon system with stay cables extending from the structure's spine. The original road overbridge, dating back to 1910, only accommodated 1.5 lanes in each direction.

The design prioritises both functionality and innovation. The use of limited piers and cable-stayed technology reduced the need for extensive foundations, minimising disruption to underground utilities, accelerating construction, and reducing traffic inconvenience. The bridge's wide span ensures a smooth connection between Barrister Nath Pai Road and the Eastern Freeway while maintaining the necessary vertical clearance for vehicles passing beneath it.

To further enhance its aesthetic value, MahaRail has incorporated architectural LED lighting, transforming the Reay Road bridge into a prominent feature of Mumbai's skyline after dark. With its efficient construction process and aesthetic enhancements, the Reay Road overbridge is set to become a landmark that contributes to both the city's traffic flow and its iconic skyline.
