Synopsis

Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also oversees the housing ministry, reviewed the department's progress and revealed plans to build 100,000 homes for mill workers. He emphasized that the state's new housing policy should focus on affordability, sustainability, and environmental friendliness. He also addresses the need for accelerating stalled redevelopment projects, particularly in Mumbai. Shinde also mentioned that Maharashtra will be the first state to introduce a housing policy for senior citizens. Various housing initiatives, including those for students, women workers, and workers in general, are underway.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also holds the housing ministry portfolio, recently conducted a review of the department and announced the construction of 100,000 homes for mill workers. Shinde directed the officials to ensure that the state's new housing policy aligns with the goals of the 'Houses for All' scheme, focusing on affordable, sustainable, and environmentally-friendly homes. He instructed them to prepare a detailed policy within a month to facilitate the implementation of schemes by MHADA and the housing department, and to expedite the stalled redevelopment projects in Mumbai.

Shinde highlighted that the state would be the first to implement a housing policy aimed at senior citizens. This policy will encompass various housing initiatives, including hostels for students and working women, homes for workers, rental properties, eco-friendly housing, and those built using innovative technology. Several projects under these categories are already being executed. The Deputy Chief Minister also emphasized the need to fast-track the pending housing projects in Mumbai.

The process for building the 100,000 homes for mill workers has been completed, and Shinde suggested that an assessment be carried out to determine if any of the mill workers who have migrated to their native villages could be offered homes there. He also called for a meeting with the mill workers' union. Additionally, Shinde confirmed that slum rehabilitation and other stalled projects in Mumbai would now be revived. The slum rehabilitation scheme, designed to make Mumbai slum-free, is a key part of these efforts.

Redevelopment projects in Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar and Kamraj Nagar are currently underway through MMRDA and the Slum Rehabilitation Authority. Furthermore, Shinde recommended the creation of a centralized, transparent, and web-based housing information portal and requested a detailed policy on transit camps for residents of unsafe buildings. He also reviewed multiple redevelopment projects, including the BDD Chawl, Patra Chawl, Motilal Nagar 1, 2, and 3 Colonies, and several others under MHADA, alongside initiatives such as the Gharkul scheme for mill workers and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

These announcements mark a significant step in addressing housing challenges in Maharashtra, especially for mill workers. The focus on redevelopment and affordable housing aligns with the broader goal of making Mumbai slum-free. It highlights the government's commitment to improving living conditions in Mumbai and other parts of the state.
