The Indiramma housing scheme is offering beneficiaries the flexibility to design their homes. The government will provide INR 5 lakh in financial assistance for constructing up to 400 sq ft, including a mandatory kitchen and toilet. Those wishing to expand beyond 400 sq ft can use personal funds. In its first phase, nearly 5 lakh eligible land-owning families will benefit. Ongoing surveys are verifying land and applicant details, with over 35 lakh of 80 lakh applications already reviewed. The state has pledged to support applicants denied central funding and is exploring options for material procurement assistance. The scheme emphasizes empowerment, autonomy, and housing accessibility.
Beneficiaries of the Indiramma housing scheme can now choose their own designs for constructing housing units, as the government has not mandated any specific layout. Those with the financial means are permitted to extend the 400 sq ft maximum built-up space outlined under the INR 5 lakh financial assistance scheme. However, it is essential that the basic construction includes a toilet and kitchen within the 400 sq ft.
Officials from the housing corporation clarified that beneficiaries wanting to build beyond the 400 sq ft, such as adding extra rooms or a hall, could do so with their own funds after completing the government-funded portion of the construction. In its first phase, the state government plans to assist nearly 5 lakh families, with eligibility restricted to those who own land. Construction is set to begin once the ongoing land surveys, which verify proposed construction sites, are completed.
Field-level surveys are currently underway, with officials verifying land and family details provided by approximately 80 lakh applicants for the scheme. After validation, the information for eligible beneficiaries is uploaded to the Indiramma housing app.
Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy shared that the groundwork for some housing units is expected to start either before or shortly after the Sankranti festival. Of the 80 lakh applications received, more than 35 lakh have already been reviewed, with their details uploaded on the app. Efforts are being made to complete the survey and scrutiny of the remaining applications as soon as possible. The minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to covering every eligible individual under the scheme.
In cases where central government funding is denied to any eligible applicant, the state government has pledged to bear the costs and ensure their inclusion in the scheme. Additionally, the state government is exploring ways to assist beneficiaries with material procurement. Beneficiaries may have the option to procure construction materials directly from the market if they prefer. A final decision on whether the government will act as a facilitator for material procurement is still pending.
The Indiramma housing scheme reflects the state government's commitment to empowering beneficiaries by providing design flexibility and potential support for material procurement. The phased rollout, focusing initially on land-owning families, ensures that the most eligible applicants are prioritised. By pledging to cover costs for applicants denied central aid, the state government underscores its dedication to the welfare of the underprivileged. This initiative aims to address housing challenges while giving beneficiaries autonomy in constructing their homes.
