The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has launched a special housing initiative with the goal of providing affordable housing to various segments of society, including construction workers, auto and cab drivers, women, ex-servicemen, war widows, people with disabilities, and beneficiaries of the PM-Vishwakarma and PM-SVAnidhi Schemes. This initiative, which was announced earlier this week, aims to make housing more accessible by offering a 25% discount on flats in areas like Narela, Siraspur, and Loknayak Puram. The initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that essential workers and disadvantaged groups in the city have access to affordable housing options.
The DDA, during a meeting chaired by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, approved a total of three housing schemes, all designed to cater to these underserved communities. As part of the new initiative, 25% of the flats in Narela's Sector G2 will be made available to eligible applicants at a discount. Approximately 700 flats are expected to be offered under this scheme. In addition, 10% of medium-income group (MIG) flats in Loknayak Puram will also be part of this discounted housing plan. The flats will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis, with applications being accepted until March 31, 2025. This move is aimed at addressing the housing needs of economically weaker sections (EWS) and providing affordable housing in areas where demand is high.
The DDA's initiative also includes the launch of the Special Housing Scheme 2025, which aims to offer 110 flats across various localities, including Vasant Kunj, Dwarka, Rohini, Ashoka Pahari, and Jahangirpuri. These locations are considered premium real estate areas in Delhi, where demand for flats is typically high. In this scheme, Vasant Kunj flats will be offered via an e-auction, while the remaining flats in other areas will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. The scheme includes units across all income categories, with flats for high-income group (HIG), medium-income group (MIG), and low-income group (LIG) applicants, making it a comprehensive approach to meeting the diverse needs of the city's population.
Beyond housing, the DDA also made significant urban planning decisions aimed at improving the city's infrastructure and optimising land use. One such decision was the approval for a land use change in Shakurbasti, where 4.63 hectares (46,300 square metres) of railway land will be converted from transportation use to residential use. This move is expected to free up valuable land for development and contribute to the creation of new housing units in a strategically important area of the city. Additionally, the DDA has updated its regulations for fuel stations on privately owned land in Delhi, streamlining the process and setting new policy guidelines. Furthermore, new rules have been established for the disposal of EWS units developed by private entities, ensuring that these properties are allocated fairly and efficiently.
This combination of new housing schemes and urban development decisions demonstrates the DDA's commitment to tackling housing affordability issues and optimising the use of available land in the capital. The schemes aim to help a broad range of Delhi's residents, from construction workers to people with disabilities, find secure and affordable housing. By making housing more accessible and improving urban infrastructure, these initiatives represent a significant step towards creating a more inclusive city, where all residents, regardless of their background or income level, have access to quality housing.
