Synopsis

The Neopolis IT Township in Thiruvananthapuram has secured initial central government approval, advancing its development within the Outer Area Growth Corridor (OAGC). Spanning 390 acres in Technopark Phase IV, Pallipuram, the INR 1,000 crore project integrates IT, aerospace, and advanced tech sectors, creating a self-sustaining urban center. Challenges remain, particularly in land acquisition for the Outer Ring Road project, crucial for connecting the industrial corridor to the Vizhinjam International Seaport. A high-level meeting in January will focus on these issues under the Capital Region Development Programme-II. Successful implementation promises economic growth, infrastructure enhancement, and job creation for Kerala.

The Neopolis IT Township project in Thiruvananthapuram is moving forward after receiving initial approval from the central government. This project is part of the Outer Area Growth Corridor (OAGC), which aims to boost economic development in the region.

During a recent meeting on December 22, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar informed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Chief Secretary Sarada Muraleedharan that the OAGC project is being prioritized. The Neopolis project is expected to receive formal approval soon, which is crucial for its implementation. A high-level meeting is scheduled for January to discuss the next steps, focusing on the Capital Region Development Programme-II (CRDP-II).

The Neopolis IT Township will be built on 390 acres in Technopark Phase IV at Pallipuram. With an estimated investment of INR 1,000 crore, this initiative is part of a broader national plan that includes eight states, with Thiruvananthapuram being the only city from Kerala involved. To ensure effective planning and coordination, the state government has formed a nine-member committee led by the IT secretary.

This township aims to create a hub for various sectors, including aerospace, electronics, software, and information technology. It will also integrate cutting-edge technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain. The project is designed to be a self-sustaining urban center, featuring not only IT and industrial infrastructure but also residential areas, shopping centers, recreational facilities, and hotels.

Despite the promising developments surrounding Neopolis, there are challenges that need to be addressed. One significant issue is the ongoing delays in land acquisition for the Outer Ring Road project, which is vital for supporting the industrial corridor linked to the Vizhinjam International Seaport. Land acquisition has faced opposition from landowners due to dissatisfaction with the current compensation model, which they argue undervalues their properties. They are advocating for fair compensation based on market value rather than depreciation.

In response to these concerns, the state government is considering seeking assistance from the central government to revise the compensation policies. This intervention could help resolve the land acquisition issues and pave the way for the timely execution of the Outer Ring Road project, which is crucial for the overall development of the region.

The Neopolis IT Township project represents a significant step toward transforming Thiruvananthapuram into a major technological and industrial hub. As the state government and central authorities work together to address existing challenges, the successful implementation of this project could lead to increased job opportunities, economic growth, and enhanced infrastructure in the region.
