Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, has directed civic bodies to conduct independent safety audits of hazardous buildings through esteemed engineering institutes. The decision followed a report by the BMC revealing only a fraction of unsafe buildings had been vacated. In a monsoon preparedness meeting, Shinde emphasized life preservation and relocation provisions for displaced families. The mandate covers multiple aspects, from leveraging modern technology in rescue operations to infrastructure maintenance, highlighting the government's comprehensive plan to ensure public safety during the upcoming monsoon season.
In a crucial move to prioritize safety, Eknath Shinde, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, directed civic bodies across the state to conduct comprehensive third-party structural audits of hazardous buildings, in collaboration with reputed engineering institutions. This order was in response to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) report of shifting tenants from only 27 of the identified 226 unsafe structures.

During a state-wide meeting centred on monsoon readiness, held at Sahyadri Guest House, Shinde highlighted the importance of this directive in avoiding potential life-threatening situations. He further advised civic bodies to facilitate appropriate accommodations for families that would be displaced, ensuring their consent to vacate compromised buildings.
Representatives from a multitude of agencies, including the Coast Guard, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Railways, and military branches, convened at this event to present their preparedness strategies. As per the official report, numerous teams from NDRF, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Navy, Coast Guard, and even two Indian Air Force helicopters stand at the ready, equipped with lifeboats and essential equipment for potential disaster management during monsoon season.
"A loss of property is recoverable, yet a life lost is irreplaceable," commented Shinde, encouraging agencies to exercise the utmost caution to prevent fatalities amid the impending monsoon. He urged the use of advanced technology in search and rescue operations and highlighted the necessity of constant communication and coordination amongst officials at all levels during this period.
Shinde also encouraged the BMC and railway officials to clear drains, reducing the risk of waterlogging on railway tracks. This would ensure the smooth commute of Mumbai's substantial suburban railway passenger population during the rains.
Additionally, Shinde requested the BMC to relocate residents from landslide-prone areas in Mumbai's suburbs, while organizing suitable alternative accommodations in schools and multi-purpose halls. He suggested stocking up on necessary supplies, such as food grains and medicines, and even employing lifeguards as a precautionary measure.
Emphasizing the state's infrastructure, Shinde instructed a state-wide initiative to repair road potholes, with the pilgrimage town of Pandharpur receiving specific funds for this purpose. He also ordered the making of the devotees' "Wari route" to Pandharpur safe and pothole-free before the Ashadhi Wari festival.
In anticipation of possible floods in Western Maharashtra and Vidarbha, Shinde urged the irrigation department to liaise with the officials of Alampatti dam in Karnataka, Sanjay Sarovar in Madhya Pradesh, and Medigatti in Telangana for a coordinated response from the onset of the monsoon season.
