The Odisha government has directed all civic bodies in the state to begin accepting applications under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) 2.0. The Odisha Urban Housing Mission (OUHM), under the Housing & Urban Development Department, has instructed civic bodies to set up helpdesks, hold ward-wise camps, and collaborate with common service centres to assist applicants. Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has already started the process by organizing a camp in Gadakana. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Gadakana in September, where he interacted with beneficiaries of the scheme. The Centre approved PMAY (U) 2.0 earlier this year, aiming to build 1 crore homes for the urban poor and middle-class families.
The Odisha government has urged all civic bodies across the state to start receiving applications under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) 2.0, an initiative aimed at providing affordable housing for the urban poor and middle-class families. The Odisha Urban Housing Mission (OUHM), functioning under the Housing & Urban Development Department, issued the instruction earlier this week, ensuring that the local bodies can effectively manage the application process.
As part of the initiative, urban local bodies (ULBs) have been instructed to set up dedicated helpdesks at their offices to assist potential beneficiaries. These helpdesks will play a vital role in guiding applicants through the process, answering queries, and ensuring all required documents are submitted accurately. To further facilitate accessibility, ULBs are also expected to organise ward-wise camps, allowing individuals in every local area to receive on-ground support in completing their applications.
In addition to these steps, the civic bodies are advised to collaborate with common service centres (CSCs), which are community-based facilities that offer digital services. These partnerships aim to ensure that the application process is streamlined and easily accessible, especially for those in remote or underserved areas who may face challenges in applying through traditional channels.
In Bhubaneswar, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has already taken the initiative by hosting a camp in Gadakana, marking the beginning of the application process in the city. The camp provided local residents with the opportunity to apply for the housing scheme, with support from trained staff who helped guide them through the procedure.
Gadakana holds special significance as it was chosen as a model area for development under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban). This selection follows the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited Gadakana on his 74th birthday in September. During his visit, he interacted with beneficiaries of the scheme, underscoring the importance of the initiative in improving the living conditions of urban residents in need of affordable housing.
Housing & Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra had advised the selection of Gadakana for this special focus. The area will now serve as a showcase for the successful implementation of the PMAY (U) 2.0 scheme, highlighting the benefits of the programme for urban areas in Odisha.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) 2.0 was approved by the Centre earlier this year, in August. The scheme aims to construct 1 crore houses over the next five years for urban poor and middle-class families, with an investment of INR 10 lakh crore. The government has committed a subsidy of INR 2.30 lakh crore to support the project, making it a significant part of the Centre's efforts to improve urban housing conditions and reduce poverty in cities.
This move not only addresses the growing demand for affordable housing in urban centres but also provides a model for other regions across the country to follow. The Odisha government's active role in launching the application process, coupled with the Centre's investment, signals a strong push toward meeting the housing needs of millions of urban citizens who currently lack proper shelter.
The Odisha government's initiative to begin the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) 2.0 application process marks a significant step towards ensuring affordable housing for urban poor and middle-class families. By establishing helpdesks, organising camps, and partnering with common service centres, local authorities are making the application process more accessible and user-friendly. Gadakana's selection as a model area showcases the state's commitment to making the scheme successful. With the Centre's approval of the PMAY (U) 2.0 earlier this year, the scheme aims to build 1 crore homes, backed by substantial financial investment, creating a lasting impact on urban housing conditions across the country.
