Following a recent multi-storey building collapse in Sohana, the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) has identified 97 high-rise buildings violating construction regulations. Mayor Amarjeet Singh Sidhu announced the findings and directed immediate action during an emergency meeting. Violations include exceeding the three-storey limit and unauthorized constructions in six villages under the MC's jurisdiction. The fire department will inspect safety measures, and owners of non-compliant structures will face enforcement actions, including rectification costs. In response to the recent multi-storey building collapse in Sohana, the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) conducted a survey revealing 97 high-rise structures constructed in violation of building regulations. Mayor Amarjeet Singh Sidhu announced the findings and held an emergency meeting with MC Commissioner T Benith, Senior Deputy Mayor Amreek Singh Somal, and officials from the building branch and fire department to address the issue. The survey highlighted that many buildings in the six villages under the MC's jurisdiction-Sohana, Kumbra, Mataur, Shahi Majra, Madanpur, and Mohali village-exceeded the permissible three-storey limit. Unauthorized constructions were identified both within and beyond designated red zones in these areas. Mayor Sidhu emphasized that regulatory violations will be dealt with strictly, ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.
During the meeting, the mayor instructed fire department officials to inspect fire safety equipment in all village buildings, citing the significant risk of fire incidents due to the violations. He underscored the urgent need to mitigate potential hazards and protect public safety.
The building branch reported that ongoing surveys in all affected villages aim to halt unapproved construction activities. The MC's engineering department is simultaneously evaluating the structural stability of buildings located within red zones. Based on these assessments, appropriate actions will be taken against buildings deemed structurally compromised.
Building owners whose structures exceed the height limit will receive official notices instructing them to address the violations. If the owners fail to comply, the MC will undertake the necessary actions to rectify the issues and recover all associated costs from the violators. The mayor reiterated that no leniency will be shown toward those disregarding regulations.
The emergency meeting also touched on the broader implications of unauthorized construction in Mohali. Officials expressed concerns about the impact of these violations on the city's infrastructure and public safety. By enforcing strict compliance with building norms, the MC aims to prevent further incidents and promote responsible urban development.
