Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development Ponguru Narayana announced that Amaravati's development projects, including 1.18 lakh TIDCO housing units, are set for completion by June 2025. During the CRDA's 44th meeting, it was revealed that INR 102 crore has been allocated to address non-performing assets within TIDCO housing, ensuring progress on stalled units. The CRDA has also approved road projects worth INR 2,723 crore in Zones 7 and 10, with tenders to be issued by January 2025. The government has cleared developmental works totaling INR 47,288 crore, emphasizing a balanced approach to infrastructure across Andhra Pradesh's 26 districts.
The Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD), Ponguru Narayana, announced significant progress on the development of Amaravati, the state capital. During a press briefing following the 44th meeting of the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA), Narayana emphasized that all developmental projects in Amaravati are expected to be completed within the next three years. This includes the construction of 1.18 lakh housing units by the Andhra Pradesh Township and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TIDCO), which are slated for completion by June 12, 2025.
Narayana explained that the state government has allocated INR 102 crore to address the issues surrounding TIDCO housing projects that have become non-performing assets. The CRDA meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, revealed that between 2014 and 2019, the central government sanctioned 7,01,481 housing units, of which five lakh received administrative approval. Currently, 4,54,706 units are under construction. However, the process faced setbacks after the previous government took over, leading to the cancellation of many housing projects and complications with bank loans intended for beneficiaries.
The total cost per housing unit is approximately INR 3.9 lakh, with the central government covering INR 1.9 lakh. The remaining costs are to be shared between the state government and beneficiaries, who are expected to secure loans from banks. Unfortunately, mismanagement led to the diversion of these funds, resulting in many units becoming non-performing assets. Narayana stressed the importance of the INR 102 crore payment to resolve these issues and move forward with the housing projects.
In addition to housing, the CRDA approved substantial road construction projects in Amaravati, specifically in Zones 7 and 10, with a budget of INR 2,723 crore. To date, the CRDA has cleared developmental works worth INR 47,288 crore in the city. Narayana stated that further approvals for remaining projects will be finalized by the end of December, with tenders expected to be issued by January 15, 2025. He reassured the public that the state government will fund all necessary expenditures to ensure Amaravati meets global development standards.
Furthermore, Narayana highlighted the government's commitment to evenly distribute development across all 26 districts of Andhra Pradesh. Since the bifurcation of the state, the government has made efforts to allocate central units fairly among districts, ensuring balanced growth and infrastructure improvement throughout the region.
The meeting included key officials, such as MAUD Secretary Kanna Babu, who discussed the strategic plans for Amaravati's future. The government aims to enhance the city's infrastructure and housing projects, fostering a more livable environment for its residents.
As Amaravati continues to develop, the focus remains on overcoming past challenges and ensuring that the vision for the state capital is realized. With the recent financial commitments and project approvals, there is renewed optimism for the timely completion of essential housing and infrastructure projects.
