Earlier this week, Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, expressed his gratitude to the Central Government for approving 6.5 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and disclosed plans to further increase this allocation by 13 lakh. The approval will provide homes to around 20 lakh out of the 26 lakh people who have registered for the scheme. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also congratulated the state for the initiative, underscoring the government's ongoing commitment to the "Housing for All" mission. This continued effort is aimed at addressing the increasing demand for housing in rural areas.
Earlier this week, Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, thanked the Central Government for approving 6.5 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and shared plans to increase the number by another 13 lakh houses. This decision, he stated, would make a significant impact on the housing needs of the state.
In a press interaction, Fadnavis called the approval "historic," highlighting that 26 lakh people had registered for the scheme and that 20 lakh of them would receive homes. He mentioned that the Central Government had approved the construction of 6.5 lakh houses for Maharashtra this year, with plans to add 13 lakh more. Fadnavis referred to this as a "substantial gift" from the Central Government, expressing that this move was a major achievement.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan later expressed his appreciation through a letter shared on social media. In the letter, Chouhan thanked both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Fadnavis for their efforts, acknowledging that the approval of 20 lakh new houses for Maharashtra under PMAY was a significant step forward. He emphasized that the move aligned with the Government of India's broader commitment to ensuring 'Housing for All' in rural areas.
Chouhan also mentioned that the Ministry of Rural Development had been implementing the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) since April 1, 2016. This initiative, he explained, assists rural households in constructing pucca houses with basic amenities. The Union Cabinet had recently approved the continuation of the scheme for another five years, extending it until March 2029, to meet the increasing housing demand in rural areas.
Furthermore, Chouhan conveyed that the state of Maharashtra had been allocated an additional 13,29,678 houses for the fiscal year 2024-25, based on the finalized Awaas+ 2018 survey. This allocation would bring the total number of houses approved for Maharashtra to 19,66,767 in FY 2024-25. Chouhan referred to this as a significant step in realizing the Government of India's vision for "Housing for All" in rural regions.
He reassured the public that the Ministry of Rural Development was committed to ensuring the successful implementation of the scheme in Maharashtra. Chouhan also stated that over 13 lakh pucca houses would be built in Maharashtra, with Prime Minister Modi's promise of providing permanent housing to the poor. He mentioned that, nationwide, the Government planned to construct two crore pucca houses in rural areas and one crore in urban areas. In Maharashtra, more than six lakh pucca houses had already been completed, and an additional 13 lakh homes had now been approved.
The Central Government's approval for an additional 13 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Maharashtra reflects the state's continued efforts to address its housing shortage. With a focus on rural housing, the initiative is part of the Government of India's ongoing commitment to ensuring affordable housing for all. As the scheme expands, Maharashtra's housing situation is expected to improve significantly, providing homes to millions of people in need.
