To accelerate development under the "Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam" housing plan, the Tamil Nadu government has authorized an additional INR 400 crore, which will be directly transferred to beneficiaries' accounts. This brings the total money disbursed to INR 1,451 crore depending on current construction status. The plan supplies 360-square-foot dwellings, including kitchens, using subsidized materials such as cement and steel. The monies are released in four installments using the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) method. Orders worth INR 3,500 crore have been made for the construction of one lakh dwellings in 2024-25. The state plans to replace 8 lakh rural huts with concrete dwellings by 2030.
In order to speed up development under the "Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam" (Kalaignar's Dream Home) plan, the Tamil Nadu government has allocated an additional INR 400 crore. With this recent allocation, the total disbursed amount currently stands at INR 1,451 crore, reflecting the current stage of work. The initiative, which includes 360 sq ft cottages with kitchens, aims to give respectable accommodation to rural households. Beneficiaries receive basic construction supplies including cement and steel bars at reduced prices from the state-owned TN Cements Corporation.
The financing is distributed in four instalments via a single nodal account under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism, which ensures openness and accountability. According to official reports, INR 860.31 crore has already been credited to recipients, with an extra INR 135.30 crore set aside for construction materials.
This ambitious program is based on Tamil Nadu's legacy of progressive housing initiatives. The late Chief Minister C N Annadurai established the groundwork for affordable housing programs, and his successor, M Karunanidhi, expanded on these efforts by launching many social housing schemes aimed at the disadvantaged. The current government, led by M K Stalin, builds on this tradition by tackling long-standing rural housing issues.
Earlier this year, the government approved a whopping INR 3,500 crore budget for the construction of one lakh concrete dwellings in fiscal year 2024-25. These buildings, which are expected to cost INR 3.50 lakh apiece, are a step toward achieving the larger goal of replacing temporary shelters with sustainable housing alternatives. Construction is allegedly moving forward at a steady rate.
A recent assessment revealed that rural Tamil Nadu still has around 8 lakh huts, highlighting the need for long-term solutions to enhance living conditions. In response, the government set an ambitious objective of constructing 8 lakh concrete houses by 2030. As part of this comprehensive plan, one lakh dwellings have already been sanctioned for building this year, and work is actively underway.
