Synopsis

Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, which serves over 35,000 passengers daily, is set to gain direct connectivity to the city's metro network. Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has submitted a proposal for a new six-kilometre metro route, estimated at INR 1,800 crore, to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. This Phase-2B extension will include four stations, with the airport station designed underground to preserve its skyline. The new route will branch from Motera, near the Narendra Modi Stadium, and pass through Koteshwar and Koba. Approval for this expansion is currently pending.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, which currently serves over 35,000 passengers daily, will soon be directly linked to the Ahmedabad Metro network. A proposal for a new six-kilometre metro route, estimated at INR 1,800 crore, has been submitted to the central government for final approval.

The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), which is handling both the Ahmedabad and Surat metro projects, has drafted a detailed project report for this new extension, which aims to connect the airport to the existing Ahmedabad Metro. According to a GMRC official, the Phase-2B extension plan has been sent to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and awaits clearance. The proposed route, which spans around six kilometres, is expected to include four metro stations, three elevated and one underground at the airport.

The official explained that the airport's skyline would remain unaffected as approximately one kilometre of the track close to the airport will be built underground. This new route will branch from Motera near the Narendra Modi Stadium and connect directly to the airport, passing through Koteshwar and Koba.

The first phase of Ahmedabad Metro, costing INR 12,700 crore, has been operational since September 2022, with the exception of a 1.4-kilometre stretch still under construction. Meanwhile, Phase II, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2024 and valued at INR 5,384 crore, currently has 21 kilometres operational out of the planned 28-kilometre route, with the remaining sections still under construction.

In conclusion, the proposed extension strengthens Ahmedabad's transport infrastructure, aiming to facilitate travel for airport passengers and integrate the airport within the city's expanding metro network. Pending final approval, the route will significantly boost connectivity, providing a seamless travel experience for residents and visitors alike.
