A high-altitude para sports centre, the first of its kind globally, is being established in Leh, Ladakh, aimed at training para-athletes for international competitions, including the 2028 Paralympics. The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and Aditya Mehta Foundation formalised this initiative, which will offer high-altitude training to enhance stamina and resilience. Before the centre's completion, selected athletes from Ladakh will train at AMF's Hyderabad academy. Offering training across a wide range of sports, the centre aspires to make Leh a unique para-sports hub, positioning India as a leader in inclusivity and excellence in global para-athletics.
A pioneering high-altitude para sports centre, the first of its kind globally, is set to be established in Leh, Ladakh, aiming to provide specialised training and development for para-athletes. This centre will prepare athletes for international competitions and has a larger vision of supporting India's para-athletes in reaching the 2028 Paralympics. The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, and the Aditya Mehta Foundation (AMF) formalised the project with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a significant step for para-sports in India.
The facility will offer high-altitude training conditions that give para-athletes an edge for competitive sports, benefiting not only Indian athletes but also those from around the world. This specialised environment is expected to enhance performance by acclimatising athletes to challenging conditions, improving stamina, and fostering resilience essential for high-stakes competitions.
During the construction phase of the Leh-based centre, the AMF will begin preparing potential athletes from Ladakh at its Hyderabad-based Infinity Parasports Academy and Rehabilitation Centre, Asia's first para sports academy and rehabilitation centre. Children with Special Needs (CwSN) from the Leh-Ladakh UT region will be selected and undergo screening, counselling, and foundational training at the Hyderabad facility, helping them develop essential skills and receive necessary rehabilitation services. As part of this initial phase, 15 candidates from Ladakh will be trained in Hyderabad, with local screenings held at the sub-divisional level to encourage broad participation.
To manage the centre's development, the CEC announced the formation of a dedicated oversight committee. In addition, officials have been directed to identify suitable land for the facility in Leh to move the project forward efficiently. Once operational, the para-sports centre will provide training across a broad range of sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, blind football, boccia, canoeing, cycling, equestrian sports, goalball, judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, volleyball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, and several wheelchair sports, such as basketball, fencing, rugby, and tennis.
The launch of this centre will have a far-reaching impact, from raising the profile of para-sports to nurturing athletes who will represent India on international stages. As para-sports gain momentum worldwide, the high-altitude centre in Leh positions India to take a leading role in the field, helping para-athletes unlock their potential and aspire to excellence at every level. This forward-thinking initiative supports India's goal for the 2028 Paralympics and provides a foundation for sustainable growth and recognition in para-sports. With careful planning, dedicated facilities, and community support, Ladakh is set to become a landmark for inclusive and advanced para-athletic training.
