Synopsis

Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, D K Shivakumar, has outlined a transformative vision for Bengaluru's metro network, aiming to extend it by 175 km by 2026. After inspecting the newly extended Nagasandra-Madavara line, Shivakumar detailed phased additions, including 30 km by 2025 and the remainder by 2026. With significant investments and collaborations-such as with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Indian Railways-;the state is enhancing metro accessibility and connectivity. Infrastructure improvements include underpasses, skywalks, and parking facilities to support seamless transit. Bengaluru's growing metro ridership underscores the network's essential role in reducing city traffic and improving commuter convenience.

Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, D K Shivakumar, announced plans to expand Bengaluru's metro network of 175 km by 2026. Following an inspection of the newly extended Nagasandra-to-Madavara section on Tumkur Road, he highlighted that 30 km of new metro lines are expected to be operational by 2025, with the full 175 km targeted for completion by 2026.

Shivakumar, accompanied by Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya and several MLAs, conducted a test run on the Nagasandra-Madavara route during his visit, beginning from Yeshwanthpur Metro Station.

Shivakumar emphasised the metro network's progress, announcing the completion of its first two phases and the Centre's approval of the third. The Karnataka government has allocated INR 1,130 crore for new metro trains to facilitate the upcoming expansion.

To improve accessibility around metro stations, the state government is working with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on several infrastructure projects. Planned enhancements include an underpass near Madavara metro station, a pedestrian skywalk at Manjunathanagar metro station, and a collaborative project with Indian Railways for a pedestrian passage at Yeshwanthpur railway station. Additionally, a project report has been developed with NHAI to construct an underpass at Chikkabidarakallu. For those commuting from Tumakuru, parking facilities will be available at BEIC ground, enabling them to transition seamlessly to metro transit for travel into the city, reducing traffic congestion.

The 3.14-km extension of the Green Line from Nagasandra to Madavara is scheduled to begin commercial operations on November 7, initially opening for public use. A formal inauguration with MPs and other officials will be held at a later date. With this extension, the Green Line now covers 33.46 km, while the Purple Line spans 40.5 km. Bengaluru remains the city with the highest metro ridership in the country, highlighting the metro's significant role in easing traffic and serving commuters effectively.

In conclusion, as Bengaluru's metro network advances, the ambitious expansion promises to transform urban mobility, reduce congestion, and support sustainable city growth. State collaborations with national agencies to develop underpasses, pedestrian pathways, and parking facilities will further improve accessibility, ensuring efficient last-mile connectivity. The planned 175-km extension by 2026 aims to strengthen the metro's role in daily commutes and address Bengaluru's traffic challenges, while the city's high ridership reflects the increasing reliance on this efficient mode of transport. With continued focus, Bengaluru's metro is set to reshape public transportation and meet the city's future needs effectively.
