The Andhra Pradesh government has approved the first phase of the Visakhapatnam metro rail project, covering about 46.23 kilometers with three main corridors. These include a 34.40 km route from Steel Plant Junction to Kommadi, a 5.08 km segment from Gurudwara to Old Post Office Junction, and a 6.75 km line from Thatichetlapalem to Chinna Waltair. The estimated cost for this phase stands at Rs 11,498 crore. Phase two will introduce a new corridor connecting Kommadi to Bhogapuram. It will be developed after the Bhogapuram airport becomes operational. A revision of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) is also underway to support these developments.
The Andhra Pradesh government has given the green light to phase one of the Visakhapatnam metro rail project, which will span approximately 46.23 kilometers.
This initial phase will feature three corridors: from Steel Plant Junction to Kommadi (34.40 km), Gurudwara to Old Post Office Junction (5.08 km), and Thatichetlapalem to Chinna Waltair (6.75 km). The revised cost estimate for this phase, adjusted to 2024 prices, amounts to Rs 11,498 crore.
Phase two of the project will introduce a fourth corridor connecting Kommadi to Bhogapuram, which will be initiated only after the Bhogapuram airport becomes operational.
In response to a request from the Union government, the Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited plans to revise the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Visakhapatnam. This update is crucial for supporting the proposed metro rail project since the original CMP, created in 2018, has a limited validity of five years.
With significant changes in traffic volumes, mobility, and infrastructure needs, a revised plan is necessary not only for the metro rail project but also for enhancing public transportation services, including bus routes, feeder services for the metro, road network expansion, and new alignments.
The approval of the Visakhapatnam metro rail project's first phase marks a significant step towards modernizing public transport in Andhra Pradesh. With a structured plan addressing key corridors, the project aims to enhance connectivity and ease traffic congestion in the region. As the project progresses, it promises to foster economic growth and improve the quality of life for residents in Visakhapatnam.
