Starting December 1, Goa's Tenant Verification Act mandates landlords to verify tenants or face a fine of INR 10,000. Enforced to curb rising criminal activities involving non-residents, the law emphasises community safety and accountability. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant highlighted its importance in addressing security concerns, supported by a state-wide police drive examining 200,000 tenants since September. Landlords must now collect identification documents and conduct basic background checks before renting properties. While compliance challenges may initially impact the rental market, the government plans to offer workshops and resources to ease the process, aiming to foster a safer environment across the state.
Starting December 1, homeowners in Goa started to face a fine of INR 10,000 if they failed to verify their tenants, as mandated by the newly implemented Tenant Verification Act. This law aims to improve safety and security in the state by ensuring that landlords take responsibility for the people they rent to. The notification from the Goa home department officially marks this date as the beginning of the Act's enforcement.
The decision to enforce this law comes in response to a rise in criminal activities involving non-residents. Reports have indicated that individuals from other states, who have relocated to Goa, have been linked to various crimes, including theft and serious offenses like murder. In light of these incidents, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant emphasised the necessity of tenant verification as a measure to protect the community. He stated that these verification norms are designed to enhance the safety of all residents.
Since September, the Goa police have been actively engaged in a special verification drive, examining the credentials of approximately 200,000 tenants throughout the state. This initiative aims to identify and address any potential security threats posed by unverified tenants. Police officials have reported that this drive has already led to the identification of several individuals with questionable backgrounds, prompting further investigations.
The Tenant Verification Act not only holds landlords accountable but also aims to foster a sense of community responsibility.
