The Tamil Nadu government's plan to develop a greenfield airport at Hosur has been hindered by a policy from the Centre. The proposed location falls within 150 km of Bengaluru airport, where no new airports can be developed until 2033 due to a concession agreement between the Civil Aviation Ministry and Bangalore International Airport Ltd. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu is advancing plans for a new airport at Parandur, 65 km from Chennai, with an investment of INR 20,000 crore. Additionally, plans are underway to expand Salem airport to accommodate larger aircraft.
While the Tamil Nadu government remains eager to develop a greenfield airport at Hosur, the Centre clarified earlier this week that the proposed location falls within 150 km of Bengaluru airport. As a result, a new airport cannot be developed at this site until 2033. Union Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu provided this information in Parliament.
The concession agreement between the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) stipulates that no new or existing airports (except for Mysuru and Hassan, which are restricted to domestic flights) may be developed, improved, or upgraded into domestic or international airports within 150 km of Bengaluru airport before the 25th anniversary of its opening, which will occur in 2033.
Currently, there is an existing airstrip at Hosur, owned and operated by Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Ltd as a private facility. In the first round of bidding under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS)-UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik), Turbo Aviation Private Ltd had bid for the Chennai-Hosur-Chennai route. However, due to the provisions in the Concession Agreement between the Aviation Ministry and BIAL, this route was not awarded, and Hosur airport was excluded from subsequent rounds of bidding.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu is already planning a greenfield airport at Parandur, located about 65 km from Chennai, with an investment of INR 20,000 crore and a projected capacity of 100 million passengers per year.
Regarding the expansion of Salem airport, the Minister explained that the airport is currently suitable for daytime operations of ATR-72 type aircraft under Visual Flight Rules. For the airport's expansion to accommodate A-321 type aircraft, a runway length of 3,200 metres will be required. The Airports Authority of India has projected that 460 acres of land will be needed in three phases, and in the first phase, 177 acres have been requested to facilitate Instrument Flight Rules operations for ATR-72 type aircraft.
The development of a new airport at Hosur is delayed due to regulatory constraints, while the focus shifts to Parandur for future airport growth. The ongoing expansion of Salem airport demonstrates progress in meeting regional connectivity needs, ensuring better infrastructure for Tamil Nadu's aviation sector in the coming years.
