The Cabinet has approved three multi-tracking railway projects worth INR 7,927 crore along the Prayagraj-Mumbai corridor, aimed at enhancing passenger and freight capacity. The projects include a 4th line between Jalgaon and Manmad (160 km), a 3rd and 4th line between Bhusawal and Khandwa (131 km), and a 3rd line from Prayagraj (Iradatganj) to Manikpur. Spanning seven districts across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, the upgrades will extend the rail network by 639 km, enabling smoother travel and increased freight traffic of 51 MTPA. These projects will also support climate goals by reducing 271 crore kilograms of CO2 emissions, equivalent to planting 11 crore trees, while boosting regional connectivity and economic growth.
Earlier this month, the Cabinet approved three major multi-tracking railway projects along the Prayagraj-Mumbai corridor valued at INR 7,927 crore. These projects aim to enhance capacity for both passenger and freight trains, facilitating smoother travel between Purvanchal and Mumbai. The announcement comes shortly after the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance secured a significant electoral victory. This corridor is a crucial route for migrant workers travelling from Purvanchal to Mumbai and other cities in Maharashtra. The approved projects are expected to decongest and improve operational efficiency on one of the busiest railway sections.
Railways and I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the projects include constructing a 4th line (160 km) between Jalgaon and Manmad, a 3rd and 4th line (131 km) between Bhusawal and Khandwa, and a 3rd line connecting Prayagraj (Iradatganj) and Manikpur. He explained that these projects would significantly enhance connectivity along the Mumbai-Prayagraj-Varanasi route, enabling the operation of additional passenger trains. He remarked that the decision to approve the projects stemmed from the need to augment capacity on key stretches of the corridor. Referring to the electoral victory, he added that with the public's support, the government could now facilitate more train services to Mumbai.
According to an official release, the projects will span seven districts across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, extending the Indian Railways network by approximately 639 km. These routes are vital for the transportation of commodities such as agricultural products, fertiliser, coal, steel, cement, and containers.
The government estimates that these capacity upgrades will generate additional freight traffic of 51 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Additionally, the projects are expected to contribute to climate goals by reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 271 crore kilograms, equivalent to planting 11 crore trees. This will also lower the country's overall logistics costs.
These railway projects will significantly improve connectivity, enhance freight capacity, and support climate goals by reducing emissions. By decongesting crucial routes, the initiatives will cater to both passenger and industrial needs while boosting regional development. Spanning three states, the enhanced network strengthens India's railway infrastructure, promising greater operational efficiency and economic benefits.
