A five-member team from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) recently visited Srikakulam district to evaluate land for a proposed airport, following Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu's initiative. Led by Deputy General Manager Parvinder, the team inspected potential sites in Mandasa and Vajrapukotturu mandals. Accompanied by local officials, they visited several villages to assess factors like land availability, natural resources, residential areas, and population density. The team also consulted with various departments regarding water resources and mining activities. Based on their evaluation, both mandals were considered suitable for the proposed airport project due to their strategic location and available land.
A five-member team from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) visited Srikakulam district to evaluate potential locations for the construction of a new airport. This initiative, aimed at boosting regional connectivity and infrastructure, was first proposed by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu during his recent visit to the district. The AAI delegation, led by Deputy General Manager (DGM) Parvinder, included key officials Malkit Singh, KP Venkata Raman, Sunil Kumar, and Sheik Abdul Azeez. They were tasked with assessing various land parcels identified by the district administration in Mandasa and Vajrapukotturu mandals, which were believed to be viable for the airport project.
Palasa RDO Venkatesh, along with the tahsildars of Mandasa, Hymavathi, and Vajrapukotturu, Sitarramaiah, accompanied the AAI team throughout their site inspection. The group visited several villages in both mandals to gather firsthand information and assess the suitability of the land. In Mandasa mandal, the team explored villages like Ganguvada, Betalapuram, Lakshmipuram, and Bidimi. In Vajrapukotturu mandal, their focus was on Anakapalli and Onkuru. These areas were selected based on their proximity to key infrastructure and the availability of land that could accommodate the airport's requirements.
During the inspection, the team evaluated several important factors, including natural resources, the presence of government and girayat lands, and residential areas in the vicinity. They also considered the local population density in each village, as this would influence both the construction and operation of the airport. Additionally, the team consulted with various departmental officials to gather relevant information on essential aspects such as water resources, the proximity of mining areas, and groundwater availability. This collaboration was crucial in understanding the environmental and logistical challenges that might arise during the airport's construction.
Sources close to the project revealed that, based on their thorough assessment, the team concluded that land parcels in both Mandasa and Vajrapukotturu mandals showed strong potential for the proposed airport construction. These areas were deemed suitable not only in terms of land availability but also for their strategic location, which would help facilitate easy access to other parts of the district and surrounding areas. The next steps in the process will likely include further consultations and a more detailed feasibility study before any final decisions are made regarding the construction of the airport.
The AAI team's assessment of potential airport sites in Mandasa and Vajrapukotturu mandals has brought the proposed airport project a step closer to realization. Their detailed evaluation of the land's suitability based on various environmental, logistical, and infrastructural factors has highlighted these areas as viable for the airport's construction. While further consultations and feasibility studies are required before finalizing the decision, the progress made thus far signals a promising future for improving regional connectivity. If the project moves forward, it could significantly enhance transportation options, economic growth, and infrastructure development in the Srikakulam district and surrounding areas.
