Amid growing criticism over delays in processing building permissions within the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) limits, the authority has announced a stringent deadline for its officers to clear files within 10 days for examination and processing. This move is aimed at improving efficiency and addressing concerns from builders and developers who have long complained about slow approval processes.


Earlier this week, Sarfaraz Ahmad, the Metropolitan Commissioner of HMDA, revealed that a special drive had been initiated to eliminate pending applications that had remained unresolved for over 30 days, with the target to reduce such backlogs to zero since the last week of October. Ahmad highlighted that the authority had been conducting weekly reviews and daily monitoring of pending applications, noting that these efforts were already yielding positive results.

The issue of delayed approvals had been a major point of contention among builders and developers, who expressed frustration over the lengthy timeframes for obtaining building and layout permissions. Reports indicated that approvals were often taking several months, slowing down project timelines. To address this, HMDA officials explained that there had been a significant rise in the number of new applications this year, particularly over the past three months, which contributed to the backlog. From June to October, HMDA received a total of 1,884 applications, up from 1,356 applications during the same period the previous year-marking an increase of 396 applications.

Despite the rise in new applications, the authority has been able to improve its efficiency in clearing these requests. The number of applications disposed of between June and October increased from 2,038 to 2,332, a rise of 14% in the disposal rate compared to the same period in the previous year. This increase in application disposal is a direct result of the ongoing measures to streamline operations and reduce delays.

Ahmad also assured that the momentum would continue into November, with both the volume of new applications and the rate of disposal showing marked improvement compared to the previous year. He expressed confidence that the authority's renewed focus on timely processing would not only address the concerns of builders and developers but also improve overall satisfaction with the approval process in the long run.

The introduction of these measures is expected to foster greater trust in the HMDA's ability to handle the growing demand for construction approvals, as Hyderabad continues to expand rapidly due to its booming real estate market and urban development. The streamlined approval process will also benefit investors, developers, and property buyers, ensuring a smoother experience as they move forward with their projects in the city.
